Tiling in a Bathroom Renovation
Tiling is an especially important part of a bathroom renovation because of the large visual impact that tiles create. It’s essential the work is completed by experienced professionals to get an outstanding result. We support our clients with a flexible tile selection process and tiling solutions customised to suit your renovation.
Tile Selection Process
Is it time to select tiles for your renovation? We encourage our clients to select tiles themselves because of the highly personal nature of selection and subtle nuances in different types of tiles. However, we are also here to help guide your decisions and can certainly help with selection in case you need assistance.
The best way is to look at tiles is in displays where they’re laid out together, because tiles create a different impression when they’re grouped together.
This can be done at local tile suppliers – if you need help finding a reputable supplier of quality tiles, just ask and we can point you in the right direction.
To help the process, we’ve compiled some useful things to keep in mind before you start looking at tiles: Six Things to Know Before Choosing Tiles For Your Renovation.

Popular Tile Sizes – A Quick Review
Wondering where to get started with tiles? Three popular tile sizes to take a look at for floor and wall tiling at the moment are 450x450mm, 300x600mm, and 600x600mm. These come in a variety of styles and we’ve been using them in a number of recent renovations. This size range includes medium and large-sized square tiles and rectangular tiles. Remember, it’s definitely worth looking at these options in-situ at the distributor to see the way they can work together visually.
Tiling Extent
Tiling can be done to different extents. The extent (or amount) of tiling has implications on cost as well as the finished result. By keeping this in mind you can save money in your renovation.
Here are examples of popular tiling solutions from our recent renovations:
Floor-Only Tiling
Tiled floors are almost a given for any bathroom project. They’re a waterproof solution to flooring that’s safest underfoot and practically a tradition. All of our Gold Coast projects include tiling for bathroom floors.
Full Floor / Full Wall Tiling
With full-floor full-wall tiling, designs range from a uniform tiling approach to a variety of combinations. A uniform option is always safe, but the opportunities for creativity and expression in a mixed approach are wide-ranging.
Full-floor full-wall tiling can be overwhelming if it isn’t approached properly, but it can also be brilliant, astonishing, or a subtle delight. It all depends on the tiles.
Half Wall Tiling
From both cost, design and functional points of view, there’s a lot of benefit in half-wall tiling. Here, tiles only go halfway up the wall, saving time and money.
This gives a waterproof solution for the full range of bathroom shower and bathing activities, but helps minimise costs in tiles and tiling. In this example, we’ve used half-wall tiling to create a ‘room within a room’.
Feature Wall
A tiled feature wall, like any feature wall, is an initiative to create a specific effect. Features walls can bold, or subversive and subtle.
Decorative tiles are usually more expensive than ordinary ones, so it’s important to keep that in mind if you’re thinking about a feature wall.
Splashbacks
Splashbacks are usually resolved with a tiled solution. Keep the same tiles going, or mix it up with a variation such as mosaic tiling. Splashbacks are a great way to link your vanity unit to the rest of the room.
Tiles can also be used in discrete applications filling an aesthetic and functional role. Examples of this are tiled bathroom niches and tile insert strip drains. These are great ways of communicating some of your bathroom’s personality in touches that emerge from the existing design foundations.
Summary
In summary, with tiling it’s important to remember that there’s more to the renovation than choosing the tiles. The extent of the tiling solution is up to you. How far you wish your bathroom tiling to go has implications on the bathroom design and the success of the renovation.
A critical consideration is obviously cost. By bringing an open mind to your renovation, you can evaluate the ways your dream tiles can be incorporated into your project, and incorporate them in a way that ensures the whole project budget will resolve.
