How Armrock Can Help

Armrock Constructions provides a total bathroom renovation service – our team includes all tradespeople necessary to complete a bathroom renovation. You can learn more about this on our services page. No bathroom renovation would be complete without tiling, and our team is here to ensure you are able to connect with the right tiles and skills needed for your project.

Tile Selection Process

When it’s time to select your tiles for your renovation, our team is here to help. Talk to us to get some expert input into your project – we can inform you on the advantages of different approaches, and guide you to our local tile distribution (Gold Coast) who will be able to help you organise the tiles you need for your project. It’s always best to look at tiles when they’re laid out (rather than looking at small samples) so you can get a proper appreciation for how they look when they’re occupying a larger space, such as a wall.

We can also advise you on tiling solutions that are popular and ones that have longevity. Some options are enticing but quickly tire. We can help you find the right tiles for your bathroom and also creating a specific style in combination with other features, such as fixtures and fittings, for a more complete and lasting style.

Budgeting For Tiles

Tiles come in a wide range of sizes, qualities, and prices. From the point of view of budgeting for your renovation, it’s important to carefully consider your choice with tiles and how this will impact your total renovation. The great thing about the wide range of choices in tiles is that you can adapt your tiling to suit your budget, as long as you are willing to compromise on stylistic aspects to some extent. We can help you connect with local providers who provide great prices for tiles – just ask our team for help with this.

Tiling in Your Project

Tiling is an important part of any renovation project, and involves a sequence of stages, all of which must be undertaken in order and some of which require a period of waiting before undertaking the next stage. Because Armrock Constructions organises the entire renovation project for you, we can optimise time consuming tasks such as tiling to fit in with other works as efficiently as possible.

Marble Tiles

Marble-look tiles are a popular Gold Coast renovation trend which create an amazingly opulent effect for any bathroom. Marble swirls bring old-world style into the modern bathroom, and our tilers can deploy this effect in a variety of different looks, with tiled niches and LED illumination to really set off the marble effect.

Tiling in Your Bathroom Renovation

Armrock Constructions specialises in bathroom renovations in the Gold Coast QLD and tiling is an important part of most of our projects. Apart from including tiling as part of our service, we work with our clients to help them come to terms with the implications of different choices in tiling, tile options, and strategies to maximise the impact of tiling in the renovation space.

Six Things to Know Before Choosing Tiles For Your Renovation

Choosing Tiles for Your Bathroom Renovation
Choosing Tiles for Your Bathroom Renovation

Looking for the perfect bathroom tiles? It won’t take you long to realise there’s more to choosing tiles than meets the eye. The world of tiles can appear complex, confusing and expensive.

The style, functionality and cost of your tiles need to be mapped to your renovation objectives in order to achieve a great result, and since tiles are so popular in kitchen and bathroom renovations, a little research and know-how goes a long way.

We’re here to help. When it’s time to renovate, we can guide you through the options and help you locate the right tiles for your project, working with reputable local suppliers to achieve great results.

To help you get started, here’s a list of 6 Things to Know Before Choosing Tiles For Your Renovation.

1. Tile Delivery Cost

When purchasing tiles, you need a plan to get them from the supplier to the renovation. Tiles are heavy and if you’re ordering in large quantities, may be impractical to handle yourself.

If you’re planning to have your tiles delivered, enquire about delivery costs and factor these into your budget. Depending on the supplier, this may incur an additional expense.

2. Tiles Come in Boxes

Tiles generally come in boxes. While there are exceptions to this rule, it means you need to be aware of how many boxes to order. This is how your figure it out:

  1. First, calculate how many square metres of tiles you need.
  2. Increase this by 10% (for cutting & breakage)
  3. Order the smallest number of boxes of tiles to achieve this amount

In other words:

Tiles come in boxes, and you need to order enough boxes of tiles to cover the area to be tiled, plus 10% extra.

3. Tiling Extent Possibilities

Tiling is a practical way to finish bathrooms, but can be done to different extents. This is a way to balance the style of your bathroom with the cost of tiling.

Examples of popular options include:

  • Floor Only
  • Floor and Half-wall
  • Feature Wall
  • Splashback

4. Quality Considerations

Just like anything, tiles come in different grades of quality. Just because two brands of tiles look the same doesn’t mean they perform equally well. Our team is here to help – just ask and we can point you in the direction of reputable, local tile suppliers.

5. Tile Availability

Need tiles tomorrow? You could be out of luck. Depending on the type and quantity of tiles, sometimes the supplier may need to order them in.

Tiles need to be organised well in advance of the renovation to make sure they’re ready to go when the time comes.

6. Tile Styles are Faddish

Tile styles change from year to year. Like fashion, some styles never age, whereas others rapidly tire and vanish. Choosing tiles should be a long-term decision – ask yourself, “will I still like these tiles in 5 years?”

Waterproofing

Waterproofing is an important step in any bathroom renovation. In this image, the waterproofing for the new shower is underway. Waterproofing is an essential step to ensure water doesn’t escape beyond areas designed to handle it.

Tiling

This bathroom has opted for a full floor and wall tiling solution. Because this type of approach does not have any tonal or textural contrast, it creates a dimensional aesthetic in which fixtures and fittings are seamlessly able to exist, guided by the grid-lines of the tiles.

Shower Head and Soap Rack

Shower Head & Rack

This simple mobile shower head solution looks great and does the trick. We’ve teamed it up with a concise glass and silver rack for accessories such as soap and shampoo. These minimal and functional features allow the tiling and frameless shower screen to do the talking in this bathroom renovation.

Tiling and Wastes

Long thin floor waste

When the tiling is a standout feature, then keep it going! This floor drain enables the shower tiling to incorporate a functional aspect without major interruption to its aesthetic.

Square Floor Drain

Finally, a square tile insert waste for the bathroom floor to compliment the shower drain. This type of solution is always worth considering because it never fails to look great, as it works in effortlessly with your existing tiling solution.

The Finished Renovation

This Gold Coast bathroom is now ready for business and looks great. It’s a clean, sharp combination of pre-fabricated and custom-made fixtures and fittings put together by our professional team.

Design Tip: Proximity

When you’re designing a bathroom, there are a variety of elements which are different shapes and sizes that need to come together to create a unified presentation. The principle of proximity refers to bringing certain elements together to create blocks, or groups of elements. This enables them to create a presence from their unified whole, rather than their individual selves.

Unlimited Bathroom Renovation

In this “Unlimited Bathroom Renovation” we have maximised space and created a distinct modern style. Armrock bathrooms are designed for Gold Coast living, and this one is no exception.

A truly spacious bathroom must not only have space but also flow. In this renovation, the sense of flow creates an effect that is unbound by the constraints of the floor, walls and ceiling.

Before the Renovation

Before the renovation commenced, the vanity, steps and bathtub took up a whole lengthwise side of the bathroom. It was a cluttered collection of fixtures and fittings that in conjunction with the old tiling and uniform colour scheme created a highly dense visual tangle. For this Gold Coast bathroom, it was time for an upgrade!

The old bathroom was:

  • Cluttered
  • Tired
  • Not optimising space

Double Mounted Basin Vanity
Double Mounted Basin Vanity

A standout element in this finished renovation is the custom-made Armrock vanity. We’re achieving extraordinary results working with modern laminate solutions. You can learn more about our custom vanities here.

Something interesting to point out about this design is the proximity of the colour tone between the floor and the front of the vanity. This gives the impression of the vanity rising up, and accentuates the benchtop, basins, tapware and broad mirror through contrast.

Unlimited Bathroom Layout

Showers create a large visual footprint because they occupy significant vertical space. This semi-frameless option diminishes this visual strength and allows the shower to blend into the room better. Because the tiling and walls of the shower consistent with the rest of the bathroom, it seems almost as if this shower is not there at all!

Having removed the bath from this room, the cistern is no longer squeezed into a corner as an afterthought. It’s still in the same position, so no plumbing relocation was required.

The solution for this renovation included a double tile insert drain – a square drain for the main bathroom and a horizontal drain for the shower. This solution gives the drains a minimal visual footprint.

From total tiled solutions to partial tiling, splash backs and feature tiling, Armrock’s experienced, licensed tilers achieve great results in accordance with our mission to provide a complete renovation service.

Armrock’s Tiling is:

  • Licensed, Qualified, Experienced
  • Integrated with Project Delivery
  • Scheduled & Organised

Tile Selection Process

Is it time to select tiles for your renovation? We generally ask our clients to take on tile selection themselves because it’s a matter of personal preference, and subtle nuances in different types of tiles should be carefully examined.

The best way is to look at tiles is in displays where they’re laid out together, because tiles create a different impression when they’re grouped together.

This can be done at local tile suppliers – if you need help finding a reputable supplier of quality tiles, just ask and we can point you in the right direction.

To help the process, we’ve compiled some useful things to keep in mind before you start looking at tiles: Six Things to Know Before Choosing Tiles For Your Renovation.

Gold Coast Bathroom Tiling Options

Armrock is ready to take on all renovation tiling. Whether you opt for floor, half-wall, feature-wall, splash back or full wall & floor tiling, we can work with your chosen tiles to get the job done.

Popular Tile Sizes

Wondering where to get started with tiles? Three popular tile sizes to take a look at for floor and wall tiling at the moment are 450x450mm, 300x600mm, and 600x600mm. These come in a variety of styles and we’ve been using them in a number of recent renovations. This size range includes medium and large-sized square tiles and rectangular tiles. Here’s an example of 900x900mm tiles in action on the floor:

Remember, it’s definitely worth looking at these options in-situ at the distributor to see the way they can work together visually.

Tiling Extent

Tiling can be done to different extents. The extent (or amount) of tiling has implications on cost as well as the finished result. By keeping this in mind you can save money in your renovation.

Here are examples of popular tiling solutions from our recent renovations:

Floor-Only Tiling

Tiled floors are almost a given for any bathroom project. They’re a waterproof solution to flooring that’s safest underfoot and practically a tradition. All of our Gold Coast projects include tiling for bathroom floors.

Full Floor / Full Wall Tiling

With full-floor full-wall tiling, designs range from a uniform tiling approach to a variety of combinations. A uniform option is always safe, but the opportunities for creativity and expression in a mixed approach are wide-ranging.

Full-floor full-wall tiling can be overwhelming if it isn’t approached properly, but it can also be brilliant, astonishing, or a subtle delight. It all depends on the tiles.

Half Wall Tiling

From both cost, design and functional points of view, there’s a lot of benefit in half-wall tiling. Here, tiles only go halfway up the wall, saving time and money.

This gives a waterproof solution for the full range of bathroom shower and bathing activities, but helps minimise costs in tiles and tiling. In this example, we’ve used half-wall tiling to create a ‘room within a room’.

Feature Wall

A tiled feature wall, like any feature wall, is an initiative to create a specific effect. Features walls can bold, or subversive and subtle.

Decorative tiles are usually more expensive than ordinary ones, so it’s important to keep that in mind if you’re thinking about a feature wall.

Splashbacks

Splashbacks are usually resolved with a tiled solution. Keep the same tiles going, or mix it up with a variation such as mosaic tiling. Splashbacks are a great way to link your vanity unit to the rest of the room.

Tiles can also be used in discrete applications filling an aesthetic and functional role. Examples of this are tiled bathroom niches and tile insert strip drains. These are great ways of communicating some of your bathroom’s personality in touches that emerge from the existing design foundations.

Summary

In summary, with tiling it’s important to remember that there’s more to the renovation than choosing the tiles. The extent of the tiling solution is up to you. How far you wish your bathroom tiling to go has implications on the bathroom design and the success of the renovation.

A critical consideration is obviously cost. By bringing an open mind to your renovation, you can evaluate the ways your dream tiles can be incorporated into your project, and incorporate them in a way that ensures the whole project budget will resolve.
