What is a Splashback?

A splashback is the name for the protective area on the wall behind your kitchen or bathroom benchtop. Splashbacks are important in wet areas such as kitchens an bathrooms, and provide the functions of protecting the wall from water and contributing to the design appeal of the room.

Do I Need a Splashback?

Splashbacks are basically an essential inclusion for any situation where there is a wet area (sink, basin) against a wall. There needs to be some type of protection from the water.

What Are Splashbacks Made of?

Splashbacks come in a variety of materials. Examples include tiles, laminate, glass, paint, timber and stainless steel. Splashback options range in quality, looks and functionality. In bathroom renovations, it is quite common for the wall-tiles to form the splashback, in which case they may be the same, or different, to the rest of the wall.

Four Key Splashback Requirements

1. Waterproof

A splashback is primarily there to contain water. A splashback should be sufficiently waterproof to prevent water permeating the wall. This can be achieved through appropriate material (e.g. tile) selection or finishing / sealing.

2. Environmental Tolerance

A splashback may be located close to heat sources including stovetop elements or device motors (e.g. fridge / microwave). A splashback should be equipped to tolerate heat from these sources. Our team will work with you to ensure your materials are up to the task required.

3. Look Great

A splashback should look great! It doesn’t need to be flamboyant or OTT to do so. Well-laid tiles always look fantastic even with the simplest design, and our team can help you create a design that will work for your walls.

4. Easy to Clean

Some materials are easier to clean than others. Ease of cleaning and maintenance should always be considered when selecting kitchen inclusions!

For assistance with splashbacks on the Gold Coast, talk to our renovation team today – we’re here to help!

Your Renovation Design

Renovations may include an overhaul (improvement of some aspects of the room) or a complete reconfiguration (structural changes to the room). This degree of scope depends on the design, objectives and budget of the completed project.

Our team can help by advancing your ideas into a design suitable for your goals, and also discuss alternative approaches to improve the cost and functionality of the new spaces.

Armrock Kitchen Renovation
Armrock Kitchen Renovation

A renovation is a combination of decisions, selections, and actions. Before any work can begin, it’s important to decide what kind of room you’d like to achieve. A great idea is to create a mood board of ideas from magazines, pinterest, or other sources.

This gives you something to base discussions on your renovation, compare and make decisions. With our experience, we can also help adapt your ideas to your budget and explore possibilities that will work for your renovation goals.

It is important to remember that some of the features you see in kitchens and bathrooms online may not be easily available in the Gold Coast. However, there are enough options to create great solutions – talk to our team and we’ll help you create the bathroom of your dreams.

For more information on renovation design, check out our page on renovation design ideas.

Budgeting For Your Renovation

Depending on how you approach your renovation, it’s important to develop a clear understanding of the costs and your responsibilities in the project.

Armrock Constructions provides a complete renovation service with all required trades for your project and we will provide a quote for your job.

In addition to our quote, be sure to take into account any external costs that may be required – for example, if you are taking on the acquisition of fixtures and fittings, or outsourcing a component of the project to another provider.

There’s some useful information about budgeting available from consumer.gov, which you can read about here.

Dealing with Shower Shape in Bathrooms

Showers are often the tallest feature AND the most vertical feature in the bathroom. For medium-sized and larger bathrooms, this can present a design challenge – how to include a different shape in the room. Typically, bathroom features are horizontal (vanity benchtop, bathtub) or low-set (toilet, rails). Showers are they opposite – vertical and tall – how can they be included without looking out of position?

Shower Size

It’s always worth looking at the size of the shower relative to the rest of the bathroom. There may not be any flexibility because of bathroom size or shower-screen size, but since it’s a renovation it helps to think with an open mind. A larger shower is not only more functional but also allows the room to breath, and expanding the verticality of the shower solution also helps to integrate it with the rest of the room as well.

Shower Heads

Double Ceiling Mounted Shower
Double Ceiling Mounted Shower

There are a wide range of ways to approach the shower head for your renovation. Factors to consider include your budget, the style you’re going for, efficiency ratings, access to the components, the existing structure, and of course, the right renovation company for a successful result. Here’s how we help make it easy for you:

Shower Head Selection

Like all fixtures and fittings in an Armrock renovation, you can acquire your own or discuss what you need with our team – we’re happy to help. Acquiring your own gives you the opportunity to shop around and find the best price. We can guide you to local suppliers we know have got the right shower heads at great prices as well.

Shower Head Options

From budget shower head solutions to integrated plumbing masterpieces, there are a wide range of possible approaches to organising this important part of your renovation. The best way is to look around and create an idea of what you’re looking to achieve – our team can then help by showing you how to approach it, and present alternatives as well.

Storage Solution

Yes – items will be kept in your shower! To avoid the worst-case scenario of storing them on the floor, consider a storage solution that suits your lifestyle. A permanent solution that’s popular with our Gold Coast clients is a tiled niche – a nice design touch that adds visual value as well as creating a permanent place to store items.

Waterproof

Especially for open shower designs, identifying and controlling the way water may be controlled in the bathroom is a matter of good design and drainage. This is the difference between a solution that looks great and one that works well in a practical sense.

Relocating Your Shower

In a bathroom renovation, the old shower is often replaced without being relocated. Keeping the shower in the original position may be the best outcome, but it’s always worth considering your options. A new bathroom may be best realised by a complete reconfiguration of the layout.

There is a popular school of thought that the relocation of any plumbing should be avoided due to the increased costs associated, but this decision should be made in the context of the scale of renovation, your ambitions for the new bathroom, and other construction considerations.

Because Armrock’s services combine vital trades such as carpentry, tiling and plumbing, when we consult on your renovation, we can help you evaluate alternative approaches and their costs and benefits.

Types of Shower Enclosures

The type of enclosure your new shower will use is as much a case of personal preference as it is practical consideration. Shower screen options have changed a lot in recent times and sometimes the hardest part is making a decision! Here are some examples from our recent Gold Coast renovations.

Showerhead Water Efficiency

Whether you’re motivated to save water or to save money, being aware of the water-efficiency benefits of different shower heads is a worthwhile exercise. Learn more about these here: water efficiency.

Bathroom Renovations Before and After

Armrock Constructions specialises in bathroom renovations on the Gold Coast QLD. No two projects are the same, but with Armock’s flexible, integrated renovation solutions we are ready to work with our clients to get great results on the back of variables such as structural considerations, budgets, fixture, fitting and tile acquisition, and renovation objectives. This gallery displays the achievements we have made with some before and after photos of bathroom renovations on the Gold Coast.Attention to detail

Unlimited Bathroom Reno Before & After

This bathroom renovation results in an unlimited spacial effect – hence the name. To learn about the full project, please visit Unlimited Bathroom Renovation.

Before The Renovation

Salmon tones abound in these pre-renovation shots. Also it is worth noting how much space the bath and the steps to the bath take up in the room – both of these were removed in the reno. Another note is the way that the tiling is crushing the perception of space in this room. The floor tiles are very busy, and their directions doen’t honour any flow through the room.

After The Renovation

In this renovation we kept the location of the toilet, vanity and shower the same to avoid moving any plumbing. We have installed a semi-frameless shower which by virtue of it’s transparency has a barely noticeable visual footprint in the room. The vanity in this renovation is a great result. It ’emerges’ from the similarly-toned flooring to bear the deluxe double-basins, table-mounted atop marble-look laminate.

Blue and Brass Renovation

This Gold Coast bathroom transform involves an upgrade, but not relocation, of all elements – cistern, shower and vanity. The main feature here is the fantastic tiling and the distinctive relationship between the deep-navy tiles and the brass fixtures and fittings that make up this renovation. It’s a striking effect which, like all renovations began with thorough planning – and demolition. Learn more about this renovation here: Blue and Brass Bathroom Renovation.

Frameless Bathroom Renovation

In this reno, we ripped out the old bathtub and opted for a floor / wall tiling solution with lovely 600x600ml square tiles for a generous spacial impression. The open shower collaborates visually with the tiles to overcome the busy-ness of this bathroom, despite the relatively close proximity of shower, cistern and vanity. Note the tile insert drains providing some visual consistency across the room, and the way the darker benchtop laminate works with them to ground the room and hold the design together. Design Tip: Contrast

This bathroom creates a strong contrast between the white tiles, the dark grout-lines and the black tapware. Black and white combinations are classical and timeless. With white as the dominant colour, the design can easily be adapted to a variety of applications. The addition of a natural component (benchtop) softens the design and makes it more accessible.

Checked Success Niche

White Subway tile Niche
White Subway tile Niche

A popular option with our Gold Coast clients is the incorporation of tiled niches into showers or walls. This approach is fast becoming a signature inclusion for many of our bathroom projects.

You can see some further examples of these types of niches in our section on tiled bathroom niches.

Tapware

Checked Tile Tapware
Checked Tile Tapware

In this renovation, the tapware, door handles and accessories are in matching matt-black. Currently, this type of approach is popular and is an easy resolution towards an integrated bathroom style. We’re often doing black (matt or gloss) or silver highlights in this way.

Design Tip: Repetition

Repeating the black tapware and fixtures in this bathroom provides a visual footprint that guides the eye through the room for continuity and to help organise the elements visually. By repeating elements in your bathroom renovation design, it creates a sense of visual expectation as the eye travels around the room.

Checked Success Shower

Subway Tile Shower
Subway Tile Shower

This shower incorporates a black framed solution to match other bathroom accessories. It’s all about those fabulous subway tiles here, showcased through the glass for a shower that’s simple yet appealing. This bathroom colour palette uses classical black and white to strong effect, but this strong palette is softened with the organic timber tones. It’s a winner!

Custom Armrock Vanity

Armrock Constructions specialises in custom vanities. You can learn more about custom vanities for your bathroom here. This vanity is a standout component of this renovation. It includes a timber-look laminate top which brings visual interest and an organic element into the design.

The gloss-white finish features matt-black fittings and tapware which link the unit to other parts of the room, and a purposeful rectangular mirror to compliment the lines in the room.
