Pre-Renovation Situation

Pre-Renovation Vanity
Pre-Renovation Shower

This pre-renovation situation is a testament to the wonders of 1970’s design… once cutting edge, but no longer! Pink tones, radical speckled benchtop, solid silver fixtures, thick white frames, contrasted grout lines, square angles, it is time to go! Our team does have the capability to redesign layouts, but in this case we kept the original layout, including the bathroom location. Read on to learn about the way we upgraded this bathroom.

New Bathroom Colour Scheme

Lilac & Blonde Timber – A Winning Recipe

This bathroom is characterised by the relationship established between the lilac herringbone feature tiles & light timber-laminate custom vanity unit. The overall impression is fresh, light, and welcoming, especially when backlit by the LEDs which are neatly tucked away behind the circular mirrors. Nice!

Herringbone Tiles

45 Degree Zig-Zag = Herringbone – Like a Fish Skeleton

The herringbone tiles used in the feature wall of this Gold Coast bathroom create a striking, but not overwhelming, effect. They’re called ‘herringbone’ because their pattern resembles the bones of a fish. Can you see this effect? At a 45 degree angle, the pattern is a zig-zag effect that can add visual interest and texture to a space.

Utilising Angles For Success

Herringbone tiles come in a variety of materials, sizes, and colors, allowing them to be used in a wide range of design styles. They can be used for both flooring and wall applications, and can be installed in both traditional and modern spaces.

Double Round Bathroom Mirrors

An Enduring Gold Coast Trend

Round bathroom mirrors continue to be a popular feature of many of our Gold Coast bathroom projects. In addition to their functional role, they soften and add dimension to the bathroom, and also enjoy a harmony with other rounded elements in the room such as the basins and bathtub.

Shower Solution

Note Shower’s Asymmetrical Disposition

The main thing with this frameless shower screen is its minimal visual footprint. It’s tucked away very nicely and neatly, and with diligent construction by our team and a triangular dimension, it is just as sturdy and robust as it looks in the photo. Note that we have also utilised a tiled niche for shampoos.

Mounted Basins

Mounted basins are a popular modern bathroom inclusion. In this renovation, the double basins have a relationship with the double circular mirrors which provides a sense of stability and balance to this aspect of the room, despite the angular nature of the original layout.

Mounted Basins – A Vintage Touch

Bathtub

It’s so simple and elegant, this bath is almost understated. Like the shower, it enjoys a solid sense of integration and confidence in the room. We’ve mirrored the dynamic of the vanity & featuring tiling here with a backlit LED tiled niche. Wow! This is a bath that is really ready to be enjoyed.

Is this bathtub From the Future?

Silver Highlights

Silver is the most popular bathroom highlight colour.

Most bathrooms have a highlight colour. This bathroom uses silver. You can see it in the tapware and towel rails, shower hinges and drains. The type of highlight colour used has a profound impact on the overall sense of bathroom style. Silver is a popular colour which also goes hand in hand with bathrooms and is essentially guaranteed to be successful. It is the most popular bathroom metallic highlight.

Timber-Look Melamine Laminate Solution

It looks like timber, it feels like timber, but it’s melamine. Melamine is a type of laminate which is one of many options for bathroom style. Visually, it can’t really be discerned from timber, and features the patterns, colours and textures of raw blonde wood. We use laminates for many of our bathroom vanity units, and they enable us to capture the look and feel of natural materials calibrated to your specific design requirements.

Bathroom Blinds

Blinds are an important detail in any bathroom renovation.

Seen here in the reflection of the circular mirrors, a white venetian blind has be utilised as the privacy solution in this bathroom. Making the right choice for blinds in your bathroom is always an important choice. In this case, the segmented venetians create a sense of horizontal movement in the room which helps to inform the flow of the room.

Custom Vanity Design

Dark Timber Vanity

Let’s get the ball rolling with this fantastic custom-made vanity unit. A custom vanity is often the cornerstone of our Gold Coast renovation projects. Bathroom Colour Scheme

Bathroom Style the Armrock Way

The overall impression of this bathroom is a light, soft, pastel tone which is communicated mainly via the tiles and paint. With highlights in silver colour, everything is in the same realm of colour, with the dark-timber vanity working as an anchor to hold everything together.

Learn about using colour to create a holistic bathroom

Bathroom Contrast

This bathroom has a medium contrast, which is established by the relationship between the vanity unit and the rest of the room. In general, the latter is quite light in tone, which helps to emphasise the presence and shape of the custom vanity and its darker timber tones.

Bathroom Patterns / Textures

With wrap-around floor and wall tiling, the pattern and texture in this bathroom is mostly attributable to the tiles. Their soft, washed style is very casual and beachy, and also warm and welcoming, making this a great bathroom for all of the family and guests as well.

A Bathroom Everyone Can Enjoy

Silver Highlights

Ensuite Custom Vanity

Bathrooms often feature a shared highlight colour which is used to link the metallic aspects of the design together. This colour is often featured in tapware and other features, such as doorknobs, shower screen frames, drains and suchlike. In this bathroom, a silver colour links everything together – a low-contrast solution which yields a lovely and welcoming feeling.

Defining with Line

One of the challenges in any bathroom renovation is reconciling the different elements in the room. Bathroom fixtures and fittings tend to be different shapes and sizes, and especially in a small room like an ensuite, careful planning is required to ensure things don’t feel like they’ve been jammed together. One way we have resolved this challenge in this particular renovation is a continuous horizontal line which wraps around the room, defined by the towel rail, shower ledge, and the base of the arched mirror. Details like this help to tie the room together and establish relationships between otherwise disparate features.

Tiled Shower Niche

Shampoo – Is Better Than Conditioner

A tiled shower ledge is a great bathroom inclusion that adds a sense of dimension to the room. It’s also a practical feature that provides a spot to store bathroom essentials such as shampoo and conditioner. (Shampoo is better than conditioner!) Another structural storage solution which is popular in many of our Gold Coast projects is a tiled bathroom niche. Both of these are great ways to solve the storage issue, whilst also adding value to the room.

Discrete Tiled Drainage

Armrock Workmanship

A tile-inset strip drain, or a series of them, are a great bespoke addition to add a sense of customisation to your Gold Coast bathroom or ensuite. Utilising existing tiles for the drain maximises continuity in the floor, whilst showcasing a subtle touch of workmanship that helps your bathroom to go the extra mile.

This Gold Coast bathroom renovation is a showcase of our capabilities. It involved a wall removal, an integrated dual renovation (main & ensuite bathroom), a high-contrast solution (charcoal tiles & light timber vanity) and a variety of other interesting features. It was a satisfying project to work on and complete. Gold Coast Ensuite Renovation

The bathroom is the most significant room in any home. At least, we think so! Bathrooms are a special class of room, which, along with kitchens and ensuites, are more suited to expressive approaches than other more mainstream interiors. The limited nature of these types of rooms, in conjunction with their special purposes, lends them towards interesting design possibilities.

An ensuite renovation may be an opportunity to create an individual identity for a new room, a partnership with an existing room (e.g. the main bathroom), or it may arrive somewhere in between. Either way, like any bathroom renovation, the personality of the room must be reimagined towards an outcome compatible with the renovation goals – while being aligned to meet a budget and retain a sense of integrity. It’s not a trivial undertaking!

The best thing about this Gold Coast ensuite renovation is the way it arrives at this intersection between style, restraint, and workmanship. There are no over-the-top features, rather a perfectly assembled collection of subtle attributes that work together to create a wonderful new room ready to add value to the property as well as to the lifestyle of residents.

We explore the ways this room is working below. If you’d like a free consultation and quote for your main bathroom or ensuite from the Gold Coast’s leading renovation company, please contact Armrock Constructions today.

Before & After

Before & After Renovation

Ensuite Shape

Because our team is led by a builder (business owner Roland Balo) structural modifications are always an option in our Gold Coast bathroom renovation projects. This might include changes such as taking out a wall, combining rooms, modifying plumbing and suchlike. In most renovations, this one included, we usually find ourselves working with the original space. Like many ensuites this one has a rectangular shape, and with limited space a carefully planned approach was required. Having said that, there has never been a bathroom reno where that’s not the case!

Ensuite Colour Scheme

The colour scheme is always going to be one of the most important aspects of a bathroom design. Regardless of other factors, colour has the capability to make the strongest initial impression and facilitate the immediate decision of “I like it” (or not). This bathroom uses a medium-toned colour scheme where white walls surround and embrace an interior floor-wall strip of textured marbled tiling.

This book-ends the room, concluding a culmination of focus towards the shower at the back of the space. The timber colour in the vanity is in sync with the flooring, although of a lighter tone, creating a sense of emergence and elevation from this feature inclusion. Finally, the brushed brass features (tap ware, shower-head, towel-rails) are a highlight which is complementary to the general colour scheme. Unlike a strong contrast bathroom (e.g. white room with black highlights) the relative closeness of the colour tones helps to integrate the overall impression of this room.

Learn about using colour to create a holistic bathroom

Ensuite Contrast

Ensuites, like bathrooms, can successfully utilise a variety of different solutions in contrast to achieve different results. From high contrast (e.g. black and white) to lower contrasts (e.g. all one colour, charcoal, perhaps, or beige) the contrast in a room largely determines how the room feels. This bathroom uses a medium/strong amount of contrast, with mid-tone tiles juxtaposed against white walls in an approximately 50/50 ratio. This solution creates a pleasant rhythm and a strong sense of integrity and balance in the room. It’s a friendly and accessible feeling – just right for a bathroom!

Bathroom Patterns / Textures

The extent of pattern & texture used in a bathroom adds depth and interest to the design, as well as a sense of hand-craft, natural materials, or process. Used minimally or extensively, in different degrees, textures and patterns can enliven and inform spaces even when they are of the same colour. This ensuite is quite textured via the extensive marbled floor / wall tiles, but, like the colour note mentioned above, this produces a medium / strong amount of contrast which reinforces the colour choice.

Timber Look Vanity

Ensuite Custom Vanity

This vanity unit is custom-made and includes timber-look laminated draws and cabinet, with a white bench top, mounted basin and brushed brass tap ware. It is a simple, minimal design, and in a style popular in many of our Gold Coast renovations. In deference to the small space offered within the ensuite, the custom vanity  also includes a toilet-roll holder on the side. In any bathroom, the vanity unit is always the centerpiece. A custom-made vanity is a fabulous way to truly embrace the sense of style you’re looking to accomplish. In addition to the size and shape of the unit, they can also be styled to your exact requirements.

Brushed Brass Fixtures

Brushed brass fixtures are a great option to add a luxurious touch to your bathroom aesthetic. They’re very versatile and work with a number of different contrast and colour solutions. They’re particularly popular with white bathroom backgrounds, which is a practical thing because many bathrooms are white.. and they go great with timber finishes, especially lighter timbers. In this bathroom, they work within a similar colour range to other tones in the room, and accentuate these whilst also bouncing off the white walls for a fresh and bright feeling.

Curved Shower Glass & Arched Mirror

Curves All Round

How to make a small ensuite feel bigger – use curves! Curves help to break up the room and create a sense of space and freedom. Even in a small ensuite, curves make a big difference. In the case of this Gold Coast renovation, the curved shower glass works together with the arched bathroom mirror not only create this sense of space, but also establish continuity within the room.

Horizontal Line

Defining with Line

One of the challenges in any bathroom renovation is reconciling the different elements in the room. Bathroom fixtures and fittings tend to be different shapes and sizes, and especially in a small room like an ensuite, careful planning is required to ensure things don’t feel like they’ve been jammed together. One way we have resolved this challenge in this particular renovation is a continuous horizontal line which wraps around the room, defined by the towel rail, shower ledge, and the base of the arched mirror. Details like this help to tie the room together and establish relationships between otherwise disparate features.

Shower Ledge

Shampoo – Is Better Than Conditioner

A tiled shower ledge is a great bathroom inclusion that adds a sense of dimension to the room. It’s also a practical feature that provides a spot to store bathroom essentials such as shampoo and conditioner. (Shampoo is better than conditioner!) Another structural storage solution which is popular in many of our Gold Coast projects is a tiled bathroom niche. Both of these are great ways to solve the storage issue, whilst also adding value to the room.

Renovation Overview

This renovation involved the removal a wall (in the main bathroom) to open the room up for a more spacious, modern feel. Changing the layout of your rooms is always a possibility. We can discuss the pros, cons and implications of these types of changes with you to help guide you toward a suitable resolution for your renovation. Here are a couple of ‘before’ pictures to show what the bathroom looked like before we got started.

Colour Scheme

High-Contrast Colour Scheme

This bathroom is leveraged aesthetically by contrast. This contrast is created by a combination of 2 light and 2 dark colours:

Light Colours:

  1. Light timber (vanity cabinet)
  2. White (basins & bathtubs)

Dark Colours

  1. Charcoal – the dominant colour (tiles)
  2. Black (highlights such as the tapware, trims, controls, etc)

It’s not complicated, and the outcome is very satisfactory. It’s also a concept that can be duplicated, and adjusted, to achieve a similar result with different nuances.

Multiple Room Renovations

Ensuite
Main Bathroom

Our projects often involve a renovation of more than one room. Undertaking a multi-room renovation like this one (main bathroom and ensuite) is all in a day’s work for the Armrock Constructions team. What we’ve achieved here is two rooms that are related, without being exactly identical. This creates a sense of nuanced relatedness.

They have a distinctive look and feel that makes it clearly obvious they are part of a broader renovation vision, without being exactly the same.

Charcoal Porcelain Tiles

The main feature of this renovation is the tiles. We’ve used 600x600mm charcoal porcelain tiles for a great result. These tiles form the background for the whole bathroom, and feature lovely random marble-like swirls that create an engaging albeit neutral background.

Learn more about renovation tiling.

Circular Mirrors

Circular Mirrors – A Winning Result

Circular mirrors are featured in quite a few of our Gold Coast renovation projects. Their round shape serves a couple of important purposes. It creates a strong focus on the person using the mirror – like a picture in a frame – that isn’t realised with a larger rectangular mirror. Also, circular mirrors are a useful bridging device in bathroom aesthetics. Because the elements in the bathroom are different shapes, sizes and colours, a judiciously placed circular mirror is an effective way of helping to link them all together!

Learn more about circular mirrors

Tiled Niches

Bathtub with Tiled Wall Niche

Tiled niches solve the functional problem of where to put your shampoo and other bathroom items. They also add a degree of depth to the bathroom. In this case, they help to integrate the room by adding a dimensional, horizontal black highlight linking both sides of the room.

Niches for Every Purpose

What’s really cool here is that while the ensuite doesn’t feature any tiled niches, it does utilise a recessed tiled solution (a nib wall) on which items can be stored, that also creates a visual relationship to the tiled niches in the main bathroom. This is the type of non-overt nuance that helps to create a relationship between the two rooms.

Learn more about tiled niches.

Black Trim

Black Trim Holding The Bathroom Together

Black trim is the highlight that holds this picture together. It’s used in a variety of places through the double-room renovation – for example, in the tapware, shower rails, tile inset drain, shower heads, and tiled niches. It makes sense, given that this room’s dominant colour is charcoal (tiles) to use a black trim, since black is the stronger version of the dominant colour. Because the black is used very minimally, it doesn’t overwhelm the rooms, rather, provides a serious of visual cues to inform the layouts and link elements together.

Wall Hung Toilet

Wall Hung Toilet with In-Wall Cistern

The ensuite in this renovation features a wall-hung toilet, with in-wall cistern. This is a great approach for an ensuite and is an effective and concise incorporation. The ability to determine if choices like this are relevant in your bathroom renovation can be clarified by our team – we know what will work, and can help guide you to the best outcome for your project.

Pink Pastel Basin Renovation

This Gold Coast bathroom renovation demonstrates how a black and white design can be softened and enervated by a splash of colour.

Pink Pastel Basin & Round Mirror

Pink Pastel Basin & Round Mirror
Pink Pastel Basin & Round Mirror

The combination of a round mirror and mounted bathroom basin in matching pink trim is a winning outcome for this Gold Coast bathroom! Creating an upbeat and positive vibe, the dash of pastel pink lifts the energy of this bathroom. A similar effect could be achieved with any number of colours, as working with a black & white backdrop is an easily adaptable foundation. Pastel colours are great in bathrooms and can be used to create discrete tonal advancements that calibrate otherwise standard designs into something more interesting.

Matching Black Trims

Matching Black Trims
Matching Black Trims

Black trims are utilised in the vanity handles, towel rails, shower frame and tapware to hold this bathroom design together. Using black trims against a white background creates a high contrast. In the case of this bathroom design, the pastel pink offsets and softens the severity of this contrast. You can learn more about using colour in your bathroom renovation in this article.

Shower Configuration

Shower Configuration
Shower Configuration

This shower configuration is simple, functional and practical. A semi-frameless shower with black trim and matching tapware, with a tile inset drain (also with matching black trim). In bathroom design, as in all design, sometimes, the simple things work best, and this bathroom is a case in point.
