Are Laminate Splashbacks a Good Bathroom Choice?

What is a Bathroom Splashback?

A splashback goes on the wall directly behind a sink or wet area. It is a distinct section, designed to add a layer of protection against water splashing onto non-water resistant areas, and also has a role to play in the presentation of the room. In the following image, you can see the splashback on the wall beneath the lights, behind the vanity unit.

Bathroom Splashback

Splashbacks can be used in bathrooms, toilets, laundries and kitchens. Splashbacks can be made from different types of materials including tiles, acrylics, glasses, laminates, and other water resistant options. In this article, we’re looking into splashbacks made from laminates, and whether they are a good choice to use in a bathroom.

Do I Need a Bathroom Splashback?

While having a splashback isn’t essential, it is essential to protect your home from water. A splashback is not the only way of achieving this. A popular option in many of our Gold Coast bathroom renovation projects is to extend the wall tiling behind the vanity to provide a layer of water resistance and protection. This style is demonstrated in the following image:

Wall Tiled Splashback

This is just one of many possible ways to solving the problem of protecting your walls from water. Another example follows, where the mirror is extended down to the top of the vanity, ensuring water resistance is achieved:

Mirror as Splashback

While splashbacks aren’t the only way to solve the problem of water-resistance behind the vanity, they are a popular solution for this problem because of the design advantages that they can bring to a bathroom. When the decision is made to include a splashback, the next choice is the type of material to use. Are laminates a good option to use in a bathroom splashback?

Laminate Splashback Viability

Bathroom splashbacks need to be water-resistant, hard-wearing, long-lasting and easy to clean. A high-quality laminate splashback meets all of these criteria. Unlike kitchen splashbacks, where proximity to the heat of a stovetop may rule out a laminated solution, they are definitely a good option to consider in bathrooms.

In addition to these features, laminate splashbacks can also be custom-made by our team to suit your vanity unit, and come in at a favourable price point compared to other splashback options. This makes laminates a highly viable splashback option for bathroom renovations.

Laminate Splashback Benefits

There are heaps of advantages to using a bathroom splashback! Let’s check out some of the common ones, which can improve the functionality and look of your renovated Gold Coast bathroom.

Easy to Clean
A bathroom splashback is usually made of materials such as glass, acrylic or tiles that are easy to clean. They can be easily wiped down with a damp cloth to remove any water spots or stains.

Moisture resistance
Splashbacks are designed to be moisture-resistant, which makes them ideal for use in bathrooms where there is a lot of moisture. They can help prevent water damage to the wall behind the sink or vanity, which can be costly to repair.

Protection
A splashback protects the wall behind the sink or vanity from water damage, stains, and mold. This can help extend the life of your bathroom and prevent costly repairs.

Hygiene
A splashback can help prevent the growth of mold and bacteria in the bathroom, which can be harmful to your health. It can also help to maintain a clean and hygienic bathroom.

Design flexibility
Splashbacks are available in a range of materials, colors, and patterns, which makes them a versatile design feature. After all, with bathrooms, it’s all about style! Laminates represent the opportunity to incorporate a huge range of styles into your bathroom design. Check out some of the options available in the Nikpol range here. You can use them to simulate timber, stone, acrylic, or introduce patterns and dynamism into your design. Learn more about timber-look laminates here. Some laminate solutions also include texture, making their presence dimensional and truer to the original material that they are replicating.

Bathroom Splashback Solutions

An important aspect of any bathroom renovation is the splashback – the protective section that goes on the wall behind the vanity. There are a number of considerations that affect decisions about splashbacks – do you need one? What material should you use? What style should you go for? Armrock Constructions is a leading Gold Coast bathroom renovation company. On this page, we discuss splashbacks to help you understand the important considerations around this inclusion. Learn more about splashbacks and benchtops on this page, or contact our team for a free appraisal and quote for your renovation today.

What is a Splashback?

A splashback is the name for the protective area on the wall behind a wet area benchtop in a kitchen, bathroom or laundry. Splashbacks have a dual function. They add a design touch and also protect the wall from water splashes. Since this protection can also be accomplished without a distinct splashback, the design aspect is the most significant to take into account. Here is a picture of a wet area with arrows indicating the splashback:

Do I Need a Splashback?

Where there is a wet area, such as a bathroom vanity, it’s important to protect non-waterproofed aspects from water. Splashbacks aren’t the only way to achieve this. It can also be done with tiling, a popular option in quite a few of our recent Gold Coast bathroom renovation projects. In this case, the tiles perform the role of waterproofing the area, without using a distinct splashback. Here are a couple of examples from our projects:

In other words, you don’t need a splashback, but you do need to ensure your wet area provides suitable protection for your walls, which can also be accomplished with tiling.

What Are Splashbacks Made of?

Splashbacks come in a variety of materials. Examples include tiles, laminate, glass, paint, timber and stainless steel. Splashback options range in quality, looks and functionality. A successful splashback will have a relationship with existing colours or styles in the bathroom. Here are a couple of different ways this can be achieved:

Low-Contrast Splashback

This low-contrast splashback is composed of a half-wall tiled solution. This is a great look that uses contrasting textures of the same colour to create a bathroom that is interestingly different, but very low-key in delivery.

High-Contrast Splashback

This tiled splashback creates a higher contrast against the lighter basin and vanity unit. At the same time, it manages to create a contrast with darker elements in the bathroom, such as the tinted glass and dark tapware.

Integrated Vanity Splashback

Utilising the same material for the benchtop and splashback is a safe and popular approach. There are a world of possibilities with splashbacks, but our team is here to help. We know what will look good, and can help you to arrive at the bathroom layout you need to create your ideal bathroom.

Four Key Splashback Requirements

1. Waterproof

A splashback should be sufficiently waterproof to prevent water permeating the wall. Apart from the material used, this requires a professional installation.

2. Environmental Tolerance

A splashback may be located close to heat sources including stovetop elements or device motors (e.g. fridge / microwave). A splashback should be equipped to tolerate heat from these sources. Our team will work with you to ensure your materials are up to the task required.

3. Look Great

A splashback should look great! It doesn’t need to be flamboyant or OTT to do so. Well-laid tiles always look fantastic even with the simplest design, and our team can help you create a design that will work for your walls.

4. Easy to Clean

Some materials are easier to clean than others. Ease of cleaning and maintenance should always be considered when selecting kitchen inclusions!

Shower Location – Stay or Move?

Shower Shapes & Sizes
Shower Shapes & Sizes

Showers are an essential inclusion in any bathroom renovation project. They also occupy a considerable amount of space in the bathroom. This becomes more apparent in a smaller bathroom. In a bathroom renovation, an early question to ask is whether the location of the shower is going to change or not. Such a move will almost certainly impact other key bathroom fixtures such as the vanity and toilet. This will take you from a renovation (refreshing the existing space) to a remodel (changing everything around). Our team is equipped to assist either way. We can also help you understand the considerations around any such move, such as plumbing or electrical, and help you find the best solution to suit your objectives and budget.

Shower Functionality

Regardless of the location of the shower, its important to ensure it will be functionally sound. That it can be accessed, and that the door can open easily and safely. That drainage is properly managed. That waterproofing measures are undertaken. Showers involve many aspects, and getting the best outcome for your Gold Coast bathroom renovation is best accomplished by working with professionals who are dedicated to achieving great results. With over 300 bathroom renovations under our belts, our team is ready to help ensure your new shower is functionally sound and ready for use.

Shower Shape and Size

A design challenge: a shower is unlike most other bathroom features. It’s tall and vertical, whereas other bathroom elements are short and horizontal. Here, we look at how shower shapes and sizes can be utilised to help your shower fit into the bathroom.

No two projects are the same, but with Armock’s flexible, integrated renovation solutions we are ready to work with our clients to get great results on the back of variables such as structural considerations, budgets, fixture, fitting and tile acquisition, and renovation objectives. Unlimited Bathroom Reno Before & After

This bathroom renovation results in an unlimited spacial effect – hence the name. To learn about the full project, please visit Unlimited Bathroom Renovation.

Before The Renovation

Salmon tones abound in these pre-renovation shots. Also it is worth noting how much space the bath and the steps to the bath take up in the room – both of these were removed in the reno. Another note is the way that the tiling is crushing the perception of space in this room. The floor tiles are very busy, and their directions doen’t honour any flow through the room.

After The Renovation

In this renovation we kept the location of the toilet, vanity and shower the same to avoid moving any plumbing. We have installed a semi-frameless shower which by virtue of it’s transparency has a barely noticeable visual footprint in the room. The vanity in this renovation is a great result. It ’emerges’ from the similarly-toned flooring to bear the deluxe double-basins, table-mounted atop marble-look laminate.

Blue and Brass Renovation

This Gold Coast bathroom transform involves an upgrade, but not relocation, of all elements – cistern, shower and vanity. The main feature here is the fantastic tiling and the distinctive relationship between the deep-navy tiles and the brass fixtures and fittings that make up this renovation. It’s a striking effect which, like all renovations began with thorough planning – and demolition. Learn more about this renovation here: Blue and Brass Bathroom Renovation.

Frameless Bathroom Renovation

In this reno, we ripped out the old bathtub and opted for a floor / wall tiling solution with lovely 600x600ml square tiles for a generous spacial impression. The open shower collaborates visually with the tiles to overcome the busy-ness of this bathroom, despite the relatively close proximity of shower, cistern and vanity. Note the tile insert drains providing some visual consistency across the room, and the way the darker benchtop laminate works with them to ground the room and hold the design together. Design Tip: Contrast

This bathroom creates a strong contrast between the white tiles, the dark grout-lines and the black tapware. Black and white combinations are classical and timeless. With white as the dominant colour, the design can easily be adapted to a variety of applications. The addition of a natural component (benchtop) softens the design and makes it more accessible.

Checked Success Niche

White Subway tile Niche
White Subway tile Niche

A popular option with our Gold Coast clients is the incorporation of tiled niches into showers or walls. This approach is fast becoming a signature inclusion for many of our bathroom projects.

You can see some further examples of these types of niches in our section on tiled bathroom niches.

Tapware

Checked Tile Tapware
Checked Tile Tapware

In this renovation, the tapware, door handles and accessories are in matching matt-black. Currently, this type of approach is popular and is an easy resolution towards an integrated bathroom style. We’re often doing black (matt or gloss) or silver highlights in this way.

Design Tip: Repetition

Repeating the black tapware and fixtures in this bathroom provides a visual footprint that guides the eye through the room for continuity and to help organise the elements visually. By repeating elements in your bathroom renovation design, it creates a sense of visual expectation as the eye travels around the room.

Checked Success Shower

Subway Tile Shower
Subway Tile Shower

This shower incorporates a black framed solution to match other bathroom accessories. It’s all about those fabulous subway tiles here, showcased through the glass for a shower that’s simple yet appealing. This bathroom colour palette uses classical black and white to strong effect, but this strong palette is softened with the organic timber tones. It’s a winner!

Custom Armrock Vanity

Armrock Constructions specialises in custom vanities. You can learn more about custom vanities for your bathroom here. This vanity is a standout component of this renovation. It includes a timber-look laminate top which brings visual interest and an organic element into the design.

The gloss-white finish features matt-black fittings and tapware which link the unit to other parts of the room, and a purposeful rectangular mirror to compliment the lines in the room.
