Bathroom Laundry Renovation

Often renovation projects extend beyond one room to a combination project. Tackling your renovation as a combination project has benefits, which we discuss on this page. In this particular job we renovated a combination bathroom & laundry which is a common undertaking for our team. This project achieved great results for our clients, who can now enjoy their amazing new bathroom and fabulous new laundry! Talk to our team about your bathroom renovation – we’re looking forward to hearing from you.

Benefits of Combination Renovations

There are two main benefits to tackling your renovations as combination projects. Firstly, you’re getting everything done in one go. Bathroom renovation can be intrusive, and successful planning means minimising how long the team needs to be on site for. Also, it’s more efficient to tackle two (or more) rooms at the same time, because the work can be streamlined much better than taking the work on separately.

There’s nothing like the feeling of walking into your own bathroom and feeling like you’re in a 5-Star resort. In this recent Gold Coast Renovation, the team from Armrock Constructions worked with our clients to create a striking, innovative and intensely modern bathroom experience. We’re proud of the results we’ve achieved. Read on to learn more about this renovation.

As soon as you step in the doorway of this bathroom, you know you’re into something special. The deep blue-greys in the door bounce off the warm timber frame for a positive transition into this expansive bathroom.

Take a look at the colour palette from the entrance. These darker tones create a backdrop against which white features such as the cistern and bathtub generate an emphatic visual appearance.

Cube Vanity Solution

Cube Vanity Solution
Cube Vanity Solution

This innovative vanity breaks away from pre-conceived vanity ideas to create a cube-like feature for the basin. It’s dead simple and it’s always going to be nice and tidy – no collection of clutter for this vanity! With its central location, it also serves to divide the room between the cistern and bathtub.

Sometimes in renovations, decisions are made for you – utilising this position for the vanity, you can see how the width is constrained by the presence of the windows on each side. We’ve turned this into a strength here by condensing the vanity for an emphatic statement.

If you’re interested in vanities, talk to our team about a custom vanity to suit your project. Learn more about custom vanities here.

In this image, you can see how the cistern, basin and bathtub are linked together by their white colour. This elevates the room and accentuates these features against the darker tones of the walls and floor. Because the bathroom has got two tall, louvred windows, a fabulous relationship occurs in which the eye is drawn up towards the twin towers of light!

Free Standing Bathtub

This free-standing bathtub enjoys the benefit of natural light from the louvres directly behind. It joins with the open shower to create a wet area and designated bathing zone on this end of the bathroom.

Rounding out this fantastic bathroom is the frameless shower. Featuring a large rainfall showerhead & handheld combo, it’s simple and elegant. The oversized wall tiles to all the talking here. This shower solution is functional, looks fantastic, and finishes off this 5-star bathroom renovation.

Design Tip: Contrast

This bathroom creates a strong contrast between the white tiles, the dark grout-lines and the black tapware. Black and white combinations are classical and timeless. With white as the dominant colour, the design can easily be adapted to a variety of applications. The addition of a natural component (benchtop) softens the design and makes it more accessible.

Checked Success Niche

White Subway tile Niche
White Subway tile Niche

A popular option with our Gold Coast clients is the incorporation of tiled niches into showers or walls. This approach is fast becoming a signature inclusion for many of our bathroom projects.

You can see some further examples of these types of niches in our section on tiled bathroom niches.

Tapware

Checked Tile Tapware
Checked Tile Tapware

In this renovation, the tapware, door handles and accessories are in matching matt-black. Currently, this type of approach is popular and is an easy resolution towards an integrated bathroom style. We’re often doing black (matt or gloss) or silver highlights in this way.

Design Tip: Repetition

Repeating the black tapware and fixtures in this bathroom provides a visual footprint that guides the eye through the room for continuity and to help organise the elements visually. By repeating elements in your bathroom renovation design, it creates a sense of visual expectation as the eye travels around the room.

Checked Success Shower

Subway Tile Shower

This shower incorporates a black framed solution to match other bathroom accessories. It’s all about those fabulous subway tiles here, showcased through the glass for a shower that’s simple yet appealing. This bathroom colour palette uses classical black and white to strong effect, but this strong palette is softened with the organic timber tones. It’s a winner!

Custom Armrock Vanity

Armrock Constructions specialises in custom vanities. You can learn more about custom vanities for your bathroom here. This vanity is a standout component of this renovation. It includes a timber-look laminate top which brings visual interest and an organic element into the design.

The gloss-white finish features matt-black fittings and tapware which link the unit to other parts of the room, and a purposeful rectangular mirror to compliment the lines in the room.

Light Grey Bathroom Renovation

This Gold Coast bathroom renovation achieves a soft, spatial elegance with a simple greytone colour scheme, carefully-selected fixtures and fittings and an open shower! It’s a winning result that includes some retro notes for interest. Read on to learn more about this project – with Armrock Constructions on the Gold Coast QLD.

Large Rectangular Mirror

Large Mirror Custom Vanity
Large Mirror Custom Vanity

A design approach that works is to accentuate the shape of a bathroom with a suitable mirror. This room is long and rectangular, and the large rectangular mirror promotes and expands this shape. In addition to helping to connect the custom vanity unit with the rest of the room, the rectangular shape gives a nod to the retro aesthetic of this renovation.

Simple White Cistern

Cistern with Grey Tiles
Cistern with Grey Tiles

This bathroom renovation demonstrates how an unostentatious approach isn’t necessary to get a great result. The cistern is simple and fits in with the rest of the room, and that’s enough. In this image you can also see the 600 x 300mm dark-grey tiles which make up the bathroom floor.

Custom Bathroom Vanity

Custom Bathroom Vanity
Custom Bathroom Vanity

Armrock specialises in custom vanity design, manufacture and installation. They’re usually the centrepiece of our completed renovations. This vanity unit confidently throws some retro style into the aesthetic with a large, laminated benchtop folded for an OTT effect. The handles, tapware and basin also reference this style – adding interest to the room.

Vanity, Shower, Cistern Layout

Light Grey Bathroom Layout
Light Grey Bathroom Layout

This bathroom was made to be used unimpeded. With no shower screen, movement is free and easy between stations. Because there is no enclosure, it’s interesting to see how the vanity and cistern are linked by the shower tapware and tiled shower-niche.

Free-Standing Tub

Free-Standing Bathtub
Free-Standing Bathtub

Sitting in-line with the 600x300mm dark-grey tiles, this free-standing tub is in the right place. Perfectly positioned next to the window, you can enjoy some filtered natural light during the day while bathing.

Wide Angle View

This shot gives a great view of the effect achieved with the tiled feature-wall. This wall is the key to the whole bathroom and creates a link between the darker floor-tiles and the fixtures and fittings within. It also acts as a giant splashback – note there isn’t one on the vanity. Tiling matters, and Armrock’s tilers always do a fabulous job. Learn more about tiling solutions here.

Open Shower

Open Shower with Tiled Niche
Open Shower with Tiled Niche

When it’s your bathroom, you can design it your way! An open shower means the whole bathroom is yours to enjoy freely, without feeling cooped up or enclosed. Perfect for balmy Gold Coast summer days!

In these photos of the shower it’s also worth looking at the styling showerhead and noting the understated, elegant contribution it makes to the room.

Shower Niche

This shower niche echoes the feature-wall tiling for an integrated, functional effect. We love installing custom shower niches and design them to suit individual bathrooms. You can read more about this option here: Tiled bathroom niches.

Timber Top Custom Vanities

We’ve used laminate solutions to get a great result for this bathroom. There’s more information about them here: timber-look laminates.

This custom vanity solution includes push-to-open doors, glossy white exteriors, timber-look laminate tops, and concise partially-extruding basin and tap combos. This type of design is uncluttered and free, and makes the bathrooms a welcoming, cheerful place to visit.

Armrock is achieving great results like this every day, creating timber and stone tops for a fraction of the cost of real materials.

Tile Mosaic Splashback

A standout of this bathroom is definitely the tile mosaic splashback. Its visual density draws the eye and explodes the rest of the room outwards in an accentuation of their minimal values.

Shower Solution

A sliding shower door has many advantages over other types of doors. It’s a great option for the ensuite because it’s space-saving and frees up the potential of the room to be used in other ways.

In the main bathroom, a semi-frameless shower is a winning solution with a minimal visual footprint inside the room. It helps maximise feature elements such as the tile mosaic splashback and vanity which can be seen unobstructed. Note the dual tile-insert drains in this image.

Heated Towel Rack

A heated towel-rack is a lavish option that will get you through winter with your sanity intact. Other options for bathrooms are heat-lamps and good design – making the most of natural light and heat.

Like the sliding shower door, this sliding bathroom door helps cut down on spacial requirements.

Finally the separate toilet is a simple solution that echoes the gloss-white tones of the vanities against the same tiles. It’s neat and tidy and looks great, just like a renovated toilet should!

Bathroom Drains

The choice and style of drain for your Gold Coast bathroom renovation can add value to the design. Drains used to be an afterthought, but now their valuable visual contribution is recognised. Whether your drains are designed to blend in or stand out, make sure you take their presence into account when planning your new bathroom.

In this article we discuss bathroom drain styles, with examples from some of our recent Gold Coast renovation projects.

Gold Coast Bathroom Floor Drain Styles

Historically, bathroom drains were considered in terms of their function rather than how they looked. In modern bathroom design, the presence of all inclusions is taken into account. Because drains are different to the area they occupy (for example, bathroom tiles) they naturally stand out to some extent.

You should consider this difference and use it to optimal effect when planning your bathroom style. The contrast created between your drain and the surrounding tiles can range from low-contrast to high-contrast, with a variety of different effects throughout the range.

Where You Find Bathroom Drains

The location and number of drains your bathroom needs will depend on the size and type of bathroom, and also on the fixtures & fittings. However, from ensuites to main bathrooms, a standard configuration will involve at least a floor drain, a shower drain. Drains may also be found in your basin and bath, but in this article we’re particularly interested in these common floor drains.

The location of these drains will depend on the bathroom and the type of shower. Generally they are optimally placed for the original design but may need to be moved in the case of a renovation or reconfiguration of the bathroom. The pros and cons of approaching this type of plumbing modification should be weighed up carefully. It’s something we can help with.

Types of Bathroom Drains

There are two types of bathroom drains we’re looking at in detail here:

  • Tile insert strip drains
  • General prefabricated bathroom drains

Tile Insert Strip Drain

The tile insert strip drain is a popular option in many of our Gold Coast renovation projects. Using the same tiles as the bathroom floor, Armrock’s tilers craft a drain that blends in with the floor for a compelling and seamless look. These type of drains are custom-made. Popular formats for these drains are squares and rectangles.

Square Inset Tile Drain

What is a Tile Insert Strip Drain?

A tile insert strip drain is a drain that uses the same tiles as the surrounding area to create a seamless effect for the drain.

The great thing about tile insert strip drains is that they are designed to blend in with the materials that surround them. The only indication of a drains presence is the functional gap to permit water flow.

General Prefabricated Bathroom Drains

Alternatively, a bathroom makeover is an opportunity to implement a pre-fabricated drain. For our Gold Coast bathroom renovation clients, we can help you to source essential components like these from reputable local suppliers. We can also help you determine the best brand or style for your renovation project.

There are numerous options available. They range from very basic, functional drains to high-end materials and styles.

What’s The Best Solution For My Bathroom?

What you include in your bathroom renovation should always be weighed up against your requirements:

  • Budget
  • Purpose / Function
  • Style

Whether you opt for a discrete option such as a tile insert strip drain or a prefabricated bathroom drain, the most important thing is that it meets your budget requirements and performs its all-important function properly. Style comes last but it’s not unimportant! A drain can really stand out and in modern bathroom design, you need to ensure it stands out in the right way. Following are some design notes about how your drains can compliment the rest of your design.

Design Principle: Repetition

A useful design principle to keep in mind when you’re considering your bathroom drain style is that of repetition – in other words, repeating similar elements through the bathroom to create an effect. This is most easily achieved with colour, but can also be done with texture, lines and shapes. Using repetition can help build a theme and create the impression of a continuous, unified design.

For example, a bathroom with silver vanity-handles could use a silver drain to create this kind of repetition. When the silver is repeated through the design (door handles, shower fixtures, cupboard handles, tapware, towel-holders) the effect takes hold. Actually, silver is an important colour in bathrooms because so many components are silver-coloured (usually because they’re made from stainless steel, which is silver.
