Custom Vanity

Bathroom Benchtop Solutions

Dark Timber Wrapped Custom Vanity Benchtop

In bathroom design, the approach to the bathroom benchtop is one of the most important decisions to make. This is because bathroom style revolves around the vanity unit, and the benchtop is the strongest visual expression of the vanity.

Therefore, decisions regarding your bathroom benchtop solution are very important. They will affect your budget, bathroom style and bathroom functionality. In this article, we look closer at the important considerations involved in selecting your bathroom vanity benchtop.

We specialise in bathroom renovations on the Gold Coast, so if you’re looking for assistance with your renovation, simply contact our team for a free consultation & quote:

The Role of The Bathroom Benchtop

While the bathroom benchtop is an integrated aspect of bathroom vanity design, it also has its own individual role to play. Whether you opt for a custom bathroom vanity or a prefabricated unit, the benchtop utilised will have two main roles:

  1. Aesthetic: It contributes to how your bathroom looks
  2. Functional: It contributes to how well your bathroom functions

These are equally important considerations. Presentation is always important, but so is functionality. For example, a bathroom benchtop must be sufficiently strong and water resistant.

Materials Used For Bathroom Benchtops

Bathroom benchtops can be made from raw materials or manufactured materials. Examples of raw materials include types of stone, such as marble or granite, and timbers, such as hardwood. Examples of manufactured materials include, laminates, acrylics, steels, ceramics, tile & porcelain. Manufactured products may resemble raw materials, or otherwise come in a variety of bespoke designs, patterns, and colours.

Bathroom Benchtop Functionality

In renovations and building, benchtops (also known as countertops) are most commonly found in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundries. In these type of rooms, they go on top of the cabinet to create a platform for functional activities. In a bathroom vanity unit, the benchtop provides a station for people to brush their teeth, shave, wash their hands, etc.

Regardless of the material you choose for your bathroom benchtop, there are an important range of functional considerations to be kept in mind. Examples include:

1. Hard-Wearing

Bathroom benchtops need to be hard-wearing. You don’t want their edges getting chipped, or scratches in their surface from everyday use. Additionally, you want them to last for a long time.

2. Suitably Strong

Bathroom benchtops must also be strong enough for their role within the vanity unit, and to support the basin, tap, and other construction aspects.

3. Stain Resistant

There are a variety of chemicals and colours used in bathroom products. Ensure you select a non-porous product for your bathroom benchtop, which will be more resistant to staining.

4. Water Resistant

Bathroom benchtops need to be water resistant, so they can handle the daily exposure to water splashes and spills without being compromised, or compromising other parts of the vanity unit.

5. Easy to Clean

Some materials are easier to clean than others. Select an option that will be easy to clean and hygienic.

Laminated Bathroom Benchtops

One option that is particularly popular in many of our Gold Coast bathroom renovations is laminated vanity benchtops. Coming in at an inexpensive price point, laminated benchtops are available in a wide range of designs which can be customised to suit your vanity requirements.

Advantages of Laminates in Bathroom Renovations

Laminates have quite a few advantages as a benchtop material in bathroom renovations. Following are reasons why you may wish to consider this option in your project:

1. Design Predictability

Raw materials are beautiful, but not predictable. Working with laminate solutions gives you access to material variations that can be used to create predictable outcomes regardless of the extent to which you are using the design in your bathroom renovation. This also enables us to produce beautiful unified vanity designs such as this one, where the cabinet and benchtop share the same style:

2. Price Point / Bathroom Budget

In bathroom renovations, possibilities are defined by your budget. Using marble laminates is an affordable solution that has a great outcome. It can be applied in high-end designs, such as this Gold Coast penthouse, to create a winning effect:

3. Versatility

laminates are versatile – we can easily work with them to create any bathroom cabinetry you require as part of our custom vanity solutions. They’re also strong and lightweight.

4. Accessing Style

Laminates come in a wide range of styles, which may be more accessible than other solutions given some of the shipping and logistical challenges being experienced around the globe. Timber laminates are a popular option, and come in a wide range of different timber styles.

5. Design Detail

In addition to the look of marble, some laminates also include texture to create a complete impression. In conjunction with their other attributes, this helps them to transform and elevate bathrooms to the next level.

Stone Vanity Benchtop

6. Hard-Wearing

Modern, high-quality bathroom laminates are hard-wearing and purpose-designed. They are made for the task at hand, and are products supported by a proper R&D and testing process.

Nikpol Laminate Benchtops

We’re achieving great results working with products made by the Austrian company Nikpol. Hard-wearing and coming in a variety of different designs and styles, their ranges give you easy access to all kinds of bathroom and kitchen design options.

This is a great example of the effect that can be achieved with a laminate solution. This Gold Coast kitchen renovation featured laminate by Austria’s Nikpol. Included below are some more samples of the results that can be achieved with this range.

How Much Does a Bathroom Benchtop Cost?

In a renovation, the cost of a bathroom benchtop may depend on a variety of factors such as the material used (laminate, quartz, acrylic, etc) and the size and configuration of the benchtop. We offer a free renovation quote as part of our service. To learn more about the costs for your renovation, contact our team. Planning Your Custom Bathroom Vanity

Planning Custom Bathroom Vanity
Planning Your Custom Bathroom Vanity

When it’s time to plan your custom bathroom vanity, it’s best to keep an open mind – to not be limited by the functionality of the previous vanity. When you’re designing the look, feel and function of your new vanity, there are multiple ways of aligning your budget with the vanity of your dreams.

If you’re on the Gold Coast QLD, our renovation team is here to help with custom vanity solutions that rapidly become the centrepiece of our new bathrooms. You can learn more about our custom vanities here. Don’t hesitate to contact our team. We’re here to help, and every new vanity includes a free consultation and quote.

Following is a collection of ideas to keep in mind to help with the process of designing your new bathroom vanity – brought to you by the Gold Coast’s leading bathroom renovation company, Armrock Constructions.

New Location or Same Location?

A renovation is an opportunity to change the layout of your bathroom. Everything can be moved – the shower, the bath, the toilet, and the vanity. Generally, the decision to relocate any major aspect of the bathroom needs to be weighed up carefully. Every move has implications due to the dependency of these types of features on plumbing and electrical.

The decision to retain your vanity location or change it to a new one is best made with professional assistance. We can help you understand what’s involved and help you make a decision.

How Many Sinks?

Custom vanities may feature a single or double sink setup. Double sinks are popular at the moment and are a luxury option that serves the function of improving bathroom efficiency as well as creating a more individualised bathroom experience. If you’re looking to transition from a single sink to a double, talk to our team to understand what may be involved from a plumbing point of view.

Floor Mounted or Wall-Mounted?

Vanities can be floor mounted or hung on the wall. By raising them up and mounting them on the wall, space underneath the vanity is freed up which provides space for feet and may improve the visual flow of the room. This is especially important in smaller rooms, but is relevant in rooms of all sizes.

Tap & Basin Range

Have you ever tried to wash your hands under a tap that’s too low, in a basin that’s too high? When you’re looking at taps and basins / sinks, keep in mind the usability and effortlessness of the solution. The combination should be workable and effective. Ideally, you should be able to freely wash your hands without hitting them on the tap or basin when you do so.

Integrate Your Vanity

The great thing about custom vanities is the ability to match them to the design of your new bathroom. A popular way to do this is to remember that the highlight features of your vanity (taps, handles, plugs) can be matched with other parts of the bathroom such as door handles, drains, shower taps, etc. This creates an easy integration that will help your vanity to fit into the bathroom.

Benchtops

If a vanity is the centrepiece of a bathroom then a vanity bench top is the centrepiece of the centrepiece. The style, texture and layout of the bench top all deserve careful attention. We work with stone, timber and laminates to achieve a variety of results across budgets.

A popular option at the moment is timber-look laminates. These help you to bring a modern design touch to even the simplest bathroom reno.

When you’re designing a vanity benchtop, there may be established factors that constrain decision-making to certain choices, depending on the situation. However, we bring a variety of experience to such situations and will be able to help create options that work for your bathroom. Learn more about vanity benchtops here.

Splashbacks

Splashbacks (the tiled wall section behind your vanity) play an important role in connecting the vanity aesthetically to the rest of the room. When you’re designing a custom vanity, the design of Splashback needs to be taken into account.

At the most basic level plain white tiles are always a popular option, and from here your imagination is the limit. Tiles come in a wide variety of shapes, styles and aesthetics. Keep in mind that a flamboyant inclusion may not prove as timeless as a simple and practical solution.

Custom Vanity Bathroom Renovation

This Gold Coast bathroom achieved a pleasing modern result. It included the installation of a custom-made vanity unity, tiling, cistern and shower. Utilising custom-made elements in your new bathroom is a fantastic way to make the most of the space and design opportunities in the room. On this page we’ll take you through the renovation and discuss highlights of the project.

The Renovation Begins

The renovation begins with the demolition of the previous bathroom. As you can see below, the previous vanity unit was limited in scope and vision.

Bathroom Tiling

450x450mm Grey Tiles
450x450mm Grey Tiles

In keeping with the modern aesthetic, this bathroom uses 450x450mm square grey tiles for the floor. Tiles in different grey tones are an easy compliment to the whites and silvers of many bathroom fixtures and fittings. There are notes on working with gloss white in your bathroom here, and you can learn more about our bathroom and kitchen tiling solutions here.

Tiled Strip Feature

The decision to include a tiled strip feature in this bathroom paid dividends. It adds some visual interest without taking over visually.

The Custom Vanity Solution

Black and White Bathroom Renovation

Black and white is a great colour combination to work with. It’s both classical and modern, making it easily applicable to a variety of styles. In this Gold Coast bathroom renovation project, Armrock Constructions achieved a sharp result. This article discusses the project and the different ways you can work with black and white to make your renovation a success.

Natural Light Amplification

Before we get started on the details, let’s just mention upfront how much this bathroom benefits from natural light. Always take into account natural light when planning your renovation. Showering, bathing and using the bathroom during daylight hours is an experience amplified by this enhancement.

Design Tip: Natural Light

Always consider how you can utilise natural lighting in your bathroom renovation. It creates a pleasant experience when using the room. Don’t forget privacy considerations!

Black Accessories

Black Bathroom Rail

Black accessories such as door handles, tapware and shower-heads is certainly a safe bet. This bathroom uses the classical black / white colour palette, in which accessories stand out and look ultra-sharp by virtue of their high-contrast relationship (in colour and texture too – matt vs gloss).

Continuation of Line and Bridging

Any bathroom renovation includes a number of important choices. This bathroom has an interesting challenge which is the disposition of the windows, in conjunction with the variations in elevation in the ceiling. As you can see below, the location of the vanity and its mirror allow a continuation of the window effect for an expansive aesthetic in the bathroom, which helps to bridge the spaces between the low and high ceiling, diminishing the impact of this difference.

Black and White Vanity Solution

Black & White Bathroom Vanity

This is a simple but lovely vanity. Simplicity is always a virtue in interior design, but there’s more happening here than immediately meets the eye. Whilst the vanity retains its sharp edges, the mounted basin provides a rounded impression, offsetting sharper edges and also proving kind on the wrists and arms when washing hands. Meanwhile, simple black handles, plug and tapware keep the black/white theme going and hold together this deceptively simple vanity.

This is a fabulous photo and highlights the large square floor-tiles used in this bathroom. The semi-frameless shower is a fine option for minimal design, and allows focus to remain on specific items of deliberate interest.

Design Tip: Contrast

This bathroom creates a strong contrast between the white tiles, the dark grout-lines and the black tapware. Black and white combinations are classical and timeless. With white as the dominant colour, the design can easily be adapted to a variety of applications. The addition of a natural component (benchtop) softens the design and makes it more accessible.

Checked Success Niche

White Subway tile Niche
White Subway tile Niche

A popular option with our Gold Coast clients is the incorporation of tiled niches into showers or walls. This approach is fast becoming a signature inclusion for many of our bathroom projects.

You can see some further examples of these types of niches in our section on tiled bathroom niches.

Tapware

Checked Tile Tapware
Checked Tile Tapware

In this renovation, the tapware, door handles and accessories are in matching matt-black. Currently, this type of approach is popular and is an easy resolution towards an integrated bathroom style. We’re often doing black (matt or gloss) or silver highlights in this way.

Design Tip: Repetition

Repeating the black tapware and fixtures in this bathroom provides a visual footprint that guides the eye through the room for continuity and to help organise the elements visually. By repeating elements in your bathroom renovation design, it creates a sense of visual expectation as the eye travels around the room.

Checked Success Shower

Subway Tile Shower

This shower incorporates a black framed solution to match other bathroom accessories. It’s all about those fabulous subway tiles here, showcased through the glass for a shower that’s simple yet appealing. This bathroom colour palette uses classical black and white to strong effect, but this strong palette is softened with the organic timber tones. It’s a winner!

Custom Armrock Vanity

Armrock Constructions specialises in custom vanities. You can learn more about custom vanities for your bathroom here. This vanity is a standout component of this renovation. It includes a timber-look laminate top which brings visual interest and an organic element into the design.

The gloss-white finish features matt-black fittings and tapware which link the unit to other parts of the room, and a purposeful rectangular mirror to compliment the lines in the room.

Light Grey Bathroom Renovation

This Gold Coast bathroom renovation achieves a soft, spatial elegance with a simple greytone colour scheme, carefully-selected fixtures and fittings and an open shower! It’s a winning result that includes some retro notes for interest. Read on to learn more about this project – with Armrock Constructions on the Gold Coast QLD.

Large Rectangular Mirror

Large Mirror Custom Vanity
Large Mirror Custom Vanity

A design approach that works is to accentuate the shape of a bathroom with a suitable mirror. This room is long and rectangular, and the large rectangular mirror promotes and expands this shape. In addition to helping to connect the custom vanity unit with the rest of the room, the rectangular shape gives a nod to the retro aesthetic of this renovation.

Simple White Cistern

Cistern with Grey Tiles

This bathroom renovation demonstrates how an unostentatious approach isn’t necessary to get a great result. The cistern is simple and fits in with the rest of the room, and that’s enough. In this image you can also see the 600 x 300mm dark-grey tiles which make up the bathroom floor.

Custom Bathroom Vanity

Custom Bathroom Vanity
Custom Bathroom Vanity

Armrock specialises in custom vanity design, manufacture and installation. They’re usually the centrepiece of our completed renovations. This vanity unit confidently throws some retro style into the aesthetic with a large, laminated benchtop folded for an OTT effect. The handles, tapware and basin also reference this style – adding interest to the room.

Vanity, Shower, Cistern Layout

Light Grey Bathroom Layout
Light Grey Bathroom Layout

This bathroom was made to be used unimpeded. With no shower screen, movement is free and easy between stations. Because there is no enclosure, it’s interesting to see how the vanity and cistern are linked by the shower tapware and tiled shower-niche.

Free-Standing Tub

Free-Standing Bathtub
Free-Standing Bathtub

Sitting in-line with the 600x300mm dark-grey tiles, this free-standing tub is in the right place. Perfectly positioned next to the window, you can enjoy some filtered natural light during the day while bathing.

Wide Angle View

This shot gives a great view of the effect achieved with the tiled feature-wall. This wall is the key to the whole bathroom and creates a link between the darker floor-tiles and the fixtures and fittings within. It also acts as a giant splashback – note there isn’t one on the vanity. Tiling matters, and Armrock’s tilers always do a fabulous job. Learn more about tiling solutions here.

Open Shower

Open Shower with Tiled Niche

When it’s your bathroom, you can design it your way! An open shower means the whole bathroom is yours to enjoy freely, without feeling cooped up or enclosed. Perfect for balmy Gold Coast summer days!

In these photos of the shower it’s also worth looking at the styling showerhead and noting the understated, elegant contribution it makes to the room.

Shower Niche

This shower niche echoes the feature-wall tiling for an integrated, functional effect. We love installing custom shower niches and design them to suit individual bathrooms. You can read more about this option here: Tiled bathroom niches.
