Shower Location – Stay or Move?

Shower Shapes & Sizes
Shower Shapes & Sizes

Showers are an essential inclusion in any bathroom renovation project. They also occupy a considerable amount of space in the bathroom. This becomes more apparent in a smaller bathroom. In a bathroom renovation, an early question to ask is whether the location of the shower is going to change or not. Such a move will almost certainly impact other key bathroom fixtures such as the vanity and toilet. This will take you from a renovation (refreshing the existing space) to a remodel (changing everything around). Our team is equipped to assist either way. We can also help you understand the considerations around any such move, such as plumbing or electrical, and help you find the best solution to suit your objectives and budget.

Shower Functionality

Regardless of the location of the shower, its important to ensure it will be functionally sound. That it can be accessed, and that the door can open easily and safely. That drainage is properly managed. That waterproofing measures are undertaken. Showers involve many aspects, and getting the best outcome for your Gold Coast bathroom renovation is best accomplished by working with professionals who are dedicated to achieving great results. With over 300 bathroom renovations under our belts, our team is ready to help ensure your new shower is functionally sound and ready for use.

Shower Shape and Size

A design challenge: a shower is unlike most other bathroom features. It’s tall and vertical, whereas other bathroom elements are short and horizontal. Here, we look at how shower shapes and sizes can be utilised to help your shower fit into the bathroom.

Shower Heads

The shower head is a key consideration in your bathroom renovation. Factors to consider include your budget, the style you’re going for, efficiency ratings, availability of components, the existing structure, and of course, the right renovation company for a successful result.

Shower Storage – A Tiled Niche

Don’t make it an afterthought.. you will be needing somewhere to store that soap and shampoo, and while there isn’t anything wrong with retro-fitting a holder, you may consider a more integrated look with an Armrock Constructions tiled bathroom niche – a suave design touch that adds visual value as well as creating a permanent place to store items.

Relocating Your Shower

A bathroom reno is a great opportunity to relocate your shower. Because the shower and the vanity are the main components in a typical bathroom, moving them around can create dynamic new interiors over which you have total control. But there are a few things to keep in mind!

Building Your Shower In

When you’re consider a shower for your new bathroom, you can go one of two ways: pre-fabricated or custom-made. Both of them have advantages. In this article, we look at how a custom-made shower can help bring the design of your bathroom together.

Tiled Bathroom Niches

Armrock Constructions specialises in bathroom renovations on the Gold Coast QLD. A tiled niche is a great addition to a bathroom that adds functional value to the design. In our recent Gold Coast bathroom renovations, we’re finding tiled bathroom niches to be a popular addition. In this article we’re going to explore this option, with examples from our projects.

What is a “Niche”?

Bath with Hexagonal Tiled Niche
Bath with Hexagonal Tiled Niche

A ‘niche’, ‘cavity’ or ‘recess’ is a step into the wall that basically works as a shelf. In a shower, this shelf may hold common items like shampoo and soap. A niche is a built-in attribute that forms a sturdy and practical shelf on which to place items.

Advantages to a Bathroom Niche

Niches perform the function of storing items in bathroom walls, but they’re not the only solution. Other popular methods include:

  1. Built-in niche
  2. Built-in shelf
  3. Removable holder / shelf

Niches have advantages over all of these. Unlike a shelf, niches don’t extrude – they’re set into the wall. Temporary solutions, on the other hand, are either hung or fixed with suction caps. Despite manufacturing promises, these plummet to the ground at the most inopportune moments, sending soap and shampoo flying – or coffee and beer, when misused by certain family members who insist on consuming these while showering.

LED Illumination

A popular trend is LED-illuminated niches, as can be seen from this recent bathroom project. These offer a designer-flavour to your Gold Coast bathroom and are a fantastic complement to Armrock’s tiled niches. Because our team includes all of the bathroom renovation trades, our builder-led team can handle your tiling, your tiled niche, and your LED illumination – as well as everything else too.

Types of Bathroom Niches

Bathroom niches come in three variants – prefabricated units, custom-made niches, and tiled bathroom niches. Prefabricated niches are purchased ready-made and come in a variety of designs. Custom-made niches are made to order. Tiled bathroom niches are a custom-made niche that’s made with tiles.

Tiled Bathroom Niche Design

First and foremost, the advantage of a tiled-bathroom niche is in the design. It’s an opportunity to create depth and interest in the bathroom. The niche itself makes a design contribution, which can be enhanced by the type of tiles used. These may be the same as the rest of the wall or a subtle, or significant contrast can be created.

There is also the opportunity to echo themes present elsewhere in the bathroom.

In the above example of our Gold Coast renovation work (Hexagonal Tiled Bathroom Niche) we’ve used hexagonal tiles within the niche which reflect the same pattern on the feature wall for repetition and continuity:

Tiled niches are fast becoming an Armrock signature. They’re a popular, practical option. A tiled niche creates a feature from an everyday item and because the niche is drawn from the same tiles as rest of the wall, an inherent compatibility is created so that the feature comes from the wall and is of the wall.

That means the niche looks like it was meant to be there, while at the same time giving more interest to the bathroom as a whole.

Niche Location Options

Tiled niches can be placed anywhere they are useful in the bathroom. We generally install them within the shower or next to the bath specifically for the purpose of holding shampoo, soaps, sponges and other bathing accessories.

Tiled Shower Niches

Tiled shower niches create interesting effects. Set into the grid created by the existing tiling, the result is three dimensional. Even when the same tiles are used, as is the case in this example, the tiled shower niche makes for a more visually interesting impression.

Bathroom Renovations Before and After

Armrock Constructions specialises in bathroom renovations on the Gold Coast QLD. No two projects are the same, but with Armock’s flexible, integrated renovation solutions we are ready to work with our clients to get great results on the back of variables such as structural considerations, budgets, fixture, fitting and tile acquisition, and renovation objectives. This gallery displays the achievements we have made with some before and after photos of bathroom renovations on the Gold Coast.Attention to detail

Unlimited Bathroom Reno Before & After

This bathroom renovation results in an unlimited spacial effect – hence the name. To learn about the full project, please visit Unlimited Bathroom Renovation.

Before The Renovation

Salmon tones abound in these pre-renovation shots. Also it is worth noting how much space the bath and the steps to the bath take up in the room – both of these were removed in the reno. Another note is the way that the tiling is crushing the perception of space in this room. The floor tiles are very busy, and their directions doen’t honour any flow through the room.

After The Renovation

In this renovation we kept the location of the toilet, vanity and shower the same to avoid moving any plumbing. We have installed a semi-frameless shower which by virtue of it’s transparency has a barely noticeable visual footprint in the room. The vanity in this renovation is a great result. It ’emerges’ from the similarly-toned flooring to bear the deluxe double-basins, table-mounted atop marble-look laminate.

Blue and Brass Renovation

This Gold Coast bathroom transform involves an upgrade, but not relocation, of all elements – cistern, shower and vanity. The main feature here is the fantastic tiling and the distinctive relationship between the deep-navy tiles and the brass fixtures and fittings that make up this renovation. It’s a striking effect which, like all renovations began with thorough planning – and demolition. Learn more about this renovation here: Blue and Brass Bathroom Renovation.

Frameless Bathroom Renovation

In this reno, we ripped out the old bathtub and opted for a floor / wall tiling solution with lovely 600x600ml square tiles for a generous spacial impression. The open shower collaborates visually with the tiles to overcome the busy-ness of this bathroom, despite the relatively close proximity of shower, cistern and vanity. Note the tile insert drains providing some visual consistency across the room, and the way the darker benchtop laminate works with them to ground the room and hold the design together. Hexagonal Tile Niche Bathroom Renovation

Grey and White Bathroom Design
Grey and White Bathroom Design

In this Gold Coast bathroom renovation, Armrock Constructions worked with our clients to achieve a fresh look for the revamped room. Features of this renovation include:

  • Hexagonal-Tiled Niche
  • Hexagonal-Tiled Feature wall
  • Simple, classy colour scheme
  • Free-standing bathtub
  • Tile Insert Strip Drain
  • Single to double vanity plumbing enhancement

Tiled Bathroom Niches

Bath with Hexagonal Tiled Niche
Bath with Hexagonal Tiled Niche

Tiled bathroom niches are an increasingly popular solution storage solution for common bathing items adjacent to showers and bathtubs. Our Gold Coast projects frequently feature the addition of a niche (or two) because they work well and look fantastic too. If you’re interested in tiled niches, please visit our page on tiled bathroom niches to see some of the different solutions we’re putting in place.

Hexagonal Tiled Features

Free Standing Bathtub with Grey Tiles
Free Standing Bathtub with Grey Tiles

What makes this bathroom a standout is the discrete application of some tiled variations to create visual depth, interest, and integration in the room. The walls are predominantly a gloss-white rectangular tile (300x600mm) which is enhanced by a feature-wall of gloss-white tiles with a hexagonal impression. It’s a subtle distinction, but its enhanced by the addition of two tiled niches with stainless-steel framing and marbled hexagonal tiles with high-contrast grout-lines for a couple of complimentary features.

Here’s how it was achieved:

Design Principal: Repetition

Repetition – it’s all about repeating elements through your design to create relationships. Every time you think about incorporating a new element (fixture, fitting, etc) pause and consider how it relates to other elements. Repetition can be used to different extents to guide the visual flow of the room.

Simple, Classy Colour Scheme

Grey and White Bathroom Design
Grey and White Bathroom Design

This bathroom utilises a winning colour scheme in grey and white tones. This combination is suitable for any modern bathroom, and it’s popular in many of our Gold Coast projects. By using this simple colour scheme, you can accessories with towels, plants, and lighting to create a variety of colourful and interesting effects, if you wish.

Free Standing Bathtub Option

Free-Standing Bathtub with Tiled Feature Wall
Free-Standing Bathtub with Tiled Feature Wall

A real feature of this bathroom is the effect of the free-standing bathtub. Although this bathroom is not especially large, this free-standing tub solution creates the impression of visual space. It’s a functional addition that’s easy on the eyes.

Tile Insert Strip Drain

Long Tile Inset Strip Drain
Long Tile Inset Strip Drain

These are popular with our clients and there’s a good reason why. In a tiled floor there’s no reason to make a feature out of the waste. In this beautiful bathroom renovation, we used a rectangular tile inset strip waste for the shower and a similar square effect for the main bathroom waste. Seamless style means you can focus on the parts of the bathroom you really want to.

Double Vanity and Plumbing

Double-Basin Prefabricated Bathroom Vanity
Double-Basin Prefabricated Bathroom Vanity

In this renovation, our clients opted for a pre-fabricated double-basin vanity. Because the previous plumbing structure was built to serve a single basin, this renovation included advancement of the plumbing water & waste for the double option to work. The plumbing is neatly tucked away inside the vanity.

Toilet Renovation

Cistern Renovation
Cistern Renovation

Renovating this toilet we have kept the same theme going with 300 x 600 tiling on the floors and walls. The wall-mounted vanity is a great way to create some extra space in this small room. To make this happen we needed to move some plumbing, but the functional result is an independently operable toilet. Topped off by some gloss-white venetian blinds, who wouldn’t want to spend some time in this room?

Chic Bathroom Renovation

In this Gold Coast bathroom renovation, the team from Armrock Constructions achieved a great result working with our client’s budget and requirements. Cost-saving measures in this project include retention of original locations such as the shower, tub and vanity, and the re-use of assets such as the tub and blinds.

In a renovation, sometimes the right solution is to replace everything – but sometimes, best results are achieved by re-using and re-invigorating existing components.

Renovation Commences

All renovations begin with a demolition stage, and this project is no exception. While the renovation process can be disruptive, Armrock minimises the impact with an efficient approach and complete team. We aim to complete your reno as quickly as possible so you can get on with life and enjoy your new bathroom!

Tiling Solution

These tiles have a long, thin horizontal disposition and they’re a non-conventional approach. Because of the soft colour tone, they create a pleasing, restful impression. Armrock’s tilers ensure tiles are laid as they should be, equipping the project for the installation of the vanity and shower.

Final Result

Our client has opted for a pre-fabricated vanity in this renovation. The circular mirror enhances the tiling for a mystical, relaxed vibe in this newly fresh, cleanly renovated Gold Coast bathroom.

Custom Vanity Bathroom Renovation

This Gold Coast bathroom achieved a pleasing modern result. It included the installation of a custom-made vanity unity, tiling, cistern and shower. Utilising custom-made elements in your new bathroom is a fantastic way to make the most of the space and design opportunities in the room. On this page we’ll take you through the renovation and discuss highlights of the project.

The Renovation Begins

The renovation begins with the demolition of the previous bathroom. As you can see below, the previous vanity unit was limited in scope and vision.

Bathroom Tiling

450x450mm Grey Tiles
450x450mm Grey Tiles

In keeping with the modern aesthetic, this bathroom uses 450x450mm square grey tiles for the floor. Tiles in different grey tones are an easy compliment to the whites and silvers of many bathroom fixtures and fittings. There are notes on working with gloss white in your bathroom here, and you can learn more about our bathroom and kitchen tiling solutions here.

Tiled Strip Feature

The decision to include a tiled strip feature in this bathroom paid dividends. It adds some visual interest without taking over visually.

The Custom Vanity Solution

Custom Vanity - After

Long and elegant, this custom-made bathroom vanity adds visual and functional value. It creates new storage possibilities, and the table-mounted basin and tap are an elegant contribution. On the Gold Coast, we’re offering custom bathroom vanity solutions designed to suit your needs.
