Polished Brass Bathroom Delight

This Gold Coast bathroom renovation project included a significant upgrade from the old, dated, cluttered bathroom to a beautiful, clean new room which is now the centrepiece of the home.

Pre-Renovation Bathroom

The pre-renovation bathroom had quite a few features from the 1980’s which are all clear indicators that it’s time for an upgrade! Note that this renovation included a complete reconfiguration of the bathroom. The bath was removed and the toilet and vanity are in new locations in the finished project.

Pre-Renovation Bathroom Layout

Polished Brass Features

This bathroom includes polished brass features throughout. With trims, drains, rails and tapware all utilising this opulent finish, a lavish and decadent impression is created. A particular point of interest in this bathroom renovation is the warm tile tone. This combines with the polished brass to create a warm, welcoming impression, whilst the marble tones and brass have a historical connotation communicating wealth and luxury.

Polished Brass Bathroom Design

Bathroom Contrast

This bathroom has a reasonably low degree of contrast until you factor in the custom vanity unit which makes a significantly darker contribution. This approach is popular in many of our Gold Coast bathroom renovations. The effect enervates the room, and creates focus and attention to the centrepiece – the custom made vanity unit.

Polished Brass Bathroom Features

Custom Vanity Unit

The custom vanity unit in this bathroom features a strident timber (laminated) cabinet and a stone benchtop. The benchtop is almost black, and the timber seams create the impression of this black benchtop floating in space. With an arched mirror, polished brass tapware & towel ring, mounted basin and upgraded power point, this overall impression is an interesting combination of old and new design ideas. In the context of the overall bathroom, these specific features recede within a room that is generally welcoming, roomy and lavish in nature.

Custom Gold Coast Bathroom Vanity Unit

Bathroom Reconfiguration

The versatility to reconfigure is always an option with Armrock Bathroom renovations. In the picture below, the toilet sits tin the nook previously occupied by the bath and vanity unit. This new bathroom is much more expansive and easy to use.

Bathroom Reconfiguration – a Renovation Option

Frameless Shower

One of the ways we’ve create a sense of vast space in this renovation is the frameless shower. In addition to opening up the room, this also allows the showcase of the beautiful polished brass features.

Open and Lavish Bathroom Features
Many Special Features in the Bathroom

Toilet Shower Integration

This picture is a great example of how we integrate rooms via the fixtures included within. From this perspective, it is clear to see how the toilet could easily be left ‘floating’ in this space. However, with judicious positioning of rails along the wall-line, integration is achieved to allow all elements to exist together – like they were meant to be there.

Integrated Bathroom Lines

Toilet Style

Occupying the corner of this bathroom is a regal throne! With copious space surrounding, access will not be an issue in this bathroom.

The in-wall cistern keeps things concise.

With beautiful concrete-look porcelain tiles wrapping all the way around this bathroom, it’s an immersive experience to enter and use the facilities. Check out the frameless shower and the way it creates an expansive sense of space in the room. This is multiplied by the in-wall cistern which enables the toilet to act minimally.

Double Custom Bathroom Vanity

This vanity features a timber-look laminate for a light, natural feel in the room. This type of laminate easily integrates with the concrete-look tiles, as well as a variety of other different finishes for floors and walls. In this bathroom, it directly receives the natural light via the large window and creates a relationship with the natural green tones happening outside. Meanwhile, with a stone benchtop and double basins, there is plenty of room for everyone when its time to brush your teeth!

Matte Vs Glossy Bathroom Sink

When it’s time to select a bathroom sink in your bathroom design, an important question arises: Should the sink finish be matte or glossy? Armrock Constructions specialises in bathroom renovations on the Gold Coast QLD, and we have used both matte and glossy sinks in a number of projects. In this article, we examine the benefits of both approaches, and hope to provide some insight to help with making a decision for your own bathroom design. Understanding the role of the Bathroom Sink

Once upon a time, bathroom sinks were not as glamorous as they are today. They were a purely functional bathroom inclusion – a necessity to capture water and enable washing. While we’re still spitting our toothpaste into them, their role has evolved. They now play a vital part in the presentation of the room. This is accomplished via these two main avenues:

  1. Presence: The bathroom sink may have more or less presence by the way it is mounted in the vanity unit. A fully recessed sink has a lower presence than a sink mounted above the vanity unit.
  2. Finish: The finish of the sink is the other important factor. The colour and texture of the sink, as the centrepiece of the vanity, which is the centrepiece of the whole bathroom, are extremely important from an aesthetic point of view.

From a functional perspective, both matte and gloss sinks perform in a similar way. There are minor differences, but they’ll both make your toothpaste disappear. However, in terms of aesthetics the outcomes are different. In this article, we examine the difference between matte and gloss sinks, and how they can be optimally applied to achieve specific design goals for your bathroom.

The Different Between Matte & Gloss Sinks

Matte and gloss are different finishes. They convey a different look and have different textures. Here is the breakdown:

Matte: Less reflective, more texture, diffuse impression
Gloss: More reflective, smoother, shiny impression

The key difference in comparing these finishes relates to their interaction with light. Because the different finishes absorb (matte) and reflect (gloss) light to different degrees, they can be judiciously added to a bathroom to create different relationships, references and continuities in a bathroom renovation design.

Here are a couple of pics from recent Armrock Gold Coast bathroom renovations to demonstrate the difference of matte and gloss sinks in action:

Gloss Bathroom Sinks – Armrock Constructions
Matte Bathroom Sink – Armrock Constructions

As you can see, depending on the amount of light in the room, they both have a degree of reflection; however, the matte finish creates a more diffuse & less shiny result. You can learn more about using matte and gloss in interior design in this article

Why Does it Matter?

I could tell you that everything matters in a bathroom renovation, but hopefully you already know that! Here’s a thought. In a bathroom, the centrepiece of the room is the bathroom vanity – it’s the key expression of the bathroom. And what sits on top of that, like a trophy on a table?

Especially in a bench-mounted format (as opposed to an inset basin), the sink becomes a signature aspect of the signature part of the bathroom design. Accordingly, it is certainly worth getting the right type of sink in place to achieve an optimal result.

How Colour Fits in

Matte and Gloss finishes can be applied to create different effects from the same colour. These finishes are colour-independent. For example, you could have a white basin with a matte finish, or a white basin with a gloss finish. Either way, it would still be white – but the finish would create a slightly different expression of the colour. There is virtually no limitation to bathroom sink colours, although mainstream design trends usually see them being available in common colours such as white, black, grey, and beige.

Matte White Sink with Timber Laminate Benchtop

Simplifying Colour

The unlimited options in interior design are liberating, but a degree of restraint is usually part of the recipe for success. The more colours you introduce to a design, the more challenging it can be to reconcile the design. Here’s where a major advantage of matte and gloss finishes becomes apparent. They provide a non-colour method of approaching diversity in bathroom design – creating subtle relationships and references that don’t take you away from your design goals. For example, if you would like to introduce a degree of contrast with your bathroom sink, it can be accomplished with a different finish, rather than a different colour.

The Natural Connection

Underpinning many modern bathroom designs is the goal to make a natural connection. In natural water environments, there is usually a combination of matte and gloss, and often relationships interchange as well. Think of river rocks, and the way they might dry out to a matte finish, only to sparkle to life when water is introduced. In these environments, everything is neither shiny nor dull – there is an interplay, and combining matte and gloss textures in a bathroom design is an extension of this naturalistic tendency.

Following are some examples of gloss an matte sinks in action in different combinations for different outcomes:

Working with Timber

Timber is a popular, enduring material for bathroom vanity design, both in benchtops and cabinetry. The relevance being that the sink appears closest to these aspects, particularly the benchtop, making that relationship very important. In the following image, which is from an Armrock renovation on the Gold Coast, you can see the gloss white sinks create a high degree of contrast with the warm, tactile timber tones.

Double Gloss Sinks with Timber-Look Laminate Vanity

In the next example, the matte sink is very similar to the vanity unit – is shares a textural and tonal relationship. Both of these outcomes are fantastic, but they feel very different. The first example is bolder, brighter, more forthright and engaging; the second example is more natural, subtle, less overtly visually engaging and somewhat understated. There is no right or wrong – it just depends on what type of bathroom is best for your home and family.

Single Matte Sink with Timber-Look Laminate Vanity

Working with Stone

In a similar way to timber, the relationships between matte and gloss bathroom sinks and their stone (or stone-look) benchtops is defined by contrasts in texture, tone, and reflection. In the following Gold Coast penthouse renovation, we have paired glossy white sinks with a black stone-look laminate benchtop with a highly reflective finish. The dual reflective finishes and high-contrast colours create a striking, sophisticated and strong impression.

Gold Coast Penthouse Renovation

Meanwhile, (and, appreciating that these are two different bathroom renovations and not directly comparable) in the following image we paired a pastel, matte raised sink with a stone-look benchtop for a completely different effect. Irrespective of colours and styles, using a matte finish in the basin generally creates a reduced, softer impression that their glossy counterparts.

Pastel Matte Bathroom Sink with Stone-Look Benchtop

We hope some of the ideas in this article have been useful for you as you approach planning your bathroom renovation, and coming to terms with matte and gloss options for your bathroom sink. If you’re on the Gold Coast, please don’t hesitate to contact our team. We look forward to helping with your bathroom renovation.

Herringbone Tiles

45 Degree Zig-Zag = Herringbone – Like a Fish Skeleton

The herringbone tiles used in the feature wall of this Gold Coast bathroom create a striking, but not overwhelming, effect. They’re called ‘herringbone’ because their pattern resembles the bones of a fish. Can you see this effect? At a 45 degree angle, the pattern is a zig-zag effect that can add visual interest and texture to a space.

Utilising Angles For Success

Herringbone tiles come in a variety of materials, sizes, and colors, allowing them to be used in a wide range of design styles. They can be used for both flooring and wall applications, and can be installed in both traditional and modern spaces.

Silver Highlights

Silver is the most popular bathroom highlight colour.

Most bathrooms have a highlight colour. This bathroom uses silver. You can see it in the tapware and towel rails, shower hinges and drains. The type of highlight colour used has a profound impact on the overall sense of bathroom style. Silver is a popular colour which also goes hand in hand with bathrooms and is essentially guaranteed to be successful. It is the most popular bathroom metallic highlight.

Timber-Look Melamine Laminate Solution

It looks like timber, it feels like timber, but it’s melamine. Melamine is a type of laminate which is one of many options for bathroom style. Visually, it can’t really be discerned from timber, and features the patterns, colours and textures of raw blonde wood. We use laminates for many of our bathroom vanity units, and they enable us to capture the look and feel of natural materials calibrated to your specific design requirements.

Bathroom Blinds

Blinds are an important detail in any bathroom renovation.

Seen here in the reflection of the circular mirrors, a white venetian blind has be utilised as the privacy solution in this bathroom. Making the right choice for blinds in your bathroom is always an important choice. In this case, the segmented venetians create a sense of horizontal movement in the room which helps to inform the flow of the room.

Bathroom Colour Scheme

Bathroom Style the Armrock Way

The overall impression of this bathroom is a light, soft, pastel tone which is communicated mainly via the tiles and paint. With highlights in silver colour, everything is in the same realm of colour, with the dark-timber vanity working as an anchor to hold everything together.

Learn about using colour to create a holistic bathroom

Bathroom Contrast

This bathroom has a medium contrast, which is established by the relationship between the vanity unit and the rest of the room. In general, the latter is quite light in tone, which helps to emphasise the presence and shape of the custom vanity and its darker timber tones.

Bathroom Patterns / Textures

With wrap-around floor and wall tiling, the pattern and texture in this bathroom is mostly attributable to the tiles. Their soft, washed style is very casual and beachy, and also warm and welcoming, making this a great bathroom for all of the family and guests as well.

A Bathroom Everyone Can Enjoy

Silver Highlights

Ensuite Custom Vanity

Bathrooms often feature a shared highlight colour which is used to link the metallic aspects of the design together. This colour is often featured in tapware and other features, such as doorknobs, shower screen frames, drains and suchlike. In this bathroom, a silver colour links everything together – a low-contrast solution which yields a lovely and welcoming feeling.

Defining with Line

One of the challenges in any bathroom renovation is reconciling the different elements in the room. Bathroom fixtures and fittings tend to be different shapes and sizes, and especially in a small room like an ensuite, careful planning is required to ensure things don’t feel like they’ve been jammed together. One way we have resolved this challenge in this particular renovation is a continuous horizontal line which wraps around the room, defined by the towel rail, shower ledge, and the base of the arched mirror. Details like this help to tie the room together and establish relationships between otherwise disparate features.

Tiled Shower Niche

Shampoo – Is Better Than Conditioner

A tiled shower ledge is a great bathroom inclusion that adds a sense of dimension to the room. It’s also a practical feature that provides a spot to store bathroom essentials such as shampoo and conditioner. (Shampoo is better than conditioner!) Another structural storage solution which is popular in many of our Gold Coast projects is a tiled bathroom niche. Both of these are great ways to solve the storage issue, whilst also adding value to the room.

Discrete Tiled Drainage

Armrock Workmanship

A tile-inset strip drain, or a series of them, are a great bespoke addition to add a sense of customisation to your Gold Coast bathroom or ensuite. Utilising existing tiles for the drain maximises continuity in the floor, whilst showcasing a subtle touch of workmanship that helps your bathroom to go the extra mile.

This Gold Coast bathroom renovation is a showcase of our capabilities. It involved a wall removal, an integrated dual renovation (main & ensuite bathroom), a high-contrast solution (charcoal tiles & light timber vanity) and a variety of other interesting features. It was a satisfying project to work on and complete.
